Notes: The organization called "211" is a loosely knit group of United Way operations that are getting national recognition. Their concept is that from any "211" equipped region, a person in need can dial "2-1-1" on their phone can get a United Way operated call center that can help. The call centers may require the person to "register" to get help, or they may help the person anonymously. Since the call centers are operated regionally, their policies and quality levels vary greatly.

In general, these call centers are incredibly useful for anyone in need. 211 has become an integral part of emergency operations in many regions of the country. These call centers, when networked with regional affiliate call centers, can handle tens of thousands of phone call inquiries a day.

At this site, you can find your local 211 web-based database if one in your region exists.

The groups that are "affiliated" with 211 are usually signed up to "serve" callers in need. So the 211 group REFERS the caller to the 211 affiliate.
