More than 200 deadly tornadoes tore through the Southeast United States. From Tuscaloosa to small towns such as Phil Campbell, families have been devastated by tragedy.

For the thousands of children and families left in the wake of the destruction—homes demolished, schools turned to rubble, entire communities blown away—the recovery is just beginning. Many children arrived at shelters barefoot, having literally run for their lives.

Save the Children is on the ground in Alabama and Mississippi in the hardest hit regions. In the early aftermath of the storm, we’ve helped more than 4,400 children. Among other things, we are:

* distributing truckloads of shoes, diapers, portable cribs and other child-specific essentials
* establishing Child-Friendly Spaces where kids can just be kids—and begin the recovery process
* providing psychosocial training in anticipation of the impact this disaster will have on children
