(Sept. 21, 2007) � The Oregon Food Bank Network needs your help. "Oregon Food Bank's warehouse shelves are as empty as I've ever seen them," said Rachel Bristol, OFB's CEO. On average, OFB normally has 300,000 pounds of new donations to offer the OFB Network weekly and delivers about 700,000 pounds of food each week from its warehouse to its network of regional food banks and local helping agencies throughout Oregon and Clark County, Wash. But in the last few weeks, weekly offerings have dropped by 25-75% and statewide deliveries are down 200,000 pounds per week. "The entire statewide Oregon Food Bank Network of regional food banks and the 900 local agencies we serve throughout Oregon and southwest Washington are feeling the impact," Bristol said. The situation � OFB is shipping available food to regional food banks and local agencies as quickly as it comes in. � Salvaged product (dented cans from retailers) is disappearing. OFB has depleted its salvaged inventory. � OFB's has depleted its frozen-food inventory, product that in recent history has served as OFB's safety net. � U.S.D.A. commodities: OFB continues to see a severe decline in U.S. Department of Agriculture commodities. During the last two months, U.S.D.A. commodities dropped an additional 300,000 pounds. Overall, during the last four years USDA commodities have dropped 52 percent or more than six-million pounds. � Food industry: Food-industry donations are down 1.1-million pounds in comparison to the same period last year. The combination of a strong consumer market, high commodity prices, increased biofuel demand, increased efficiency in food manufacturing and international markets mean both national and local sources of food are way down. � Food recall: Last month, due to a major, nationwide recall of products from a food-processing plant, OFB returned two-and-a-half truckloads of product to the manufacturer and has additional two-and-a-half truckloads of product on hold that OFB can't distribute. "All of this means we have a big gap to fill � even before the holiday giving season � and need your support more than ever to help people in need," Bristol said.
