Key Steps For Evacuees
Immediate Steps

If you do not have accommodations, proceed to your nearest Evacuation and Reception Centre - You do not need to go to a centre if you are staying with friends or family, or staying in a hotel.
Register with the Red Cross - The phone lines are busy right now so it may take numerous tries over a couple of days. It is important to register so that you can be contacted with important information over the coming weeks. You can now register online here.
Email the Municipality of Wood Buffalo - Provide your name, location and confirmation of safety.
Contact Your Insurance Company and Start Your Claim - Your insurance company may be able to provide some initial funds and support immediately. No matter when you contact them, keep all of your receipts while you are displaced as most costs will be reimbursable under your home insurance policy.

Fort McMurray Accommodation Matching - 2016 Fires

Update - May 5, 2016: With the evacuation of over 29,000 50,000 88,000 residents of Fort McMurray on May 3, 2016, this site aimed to help pair Albertans able to open their homes, rental properties, recreational properties, and other available space to people in need of somewhere to stay. On May 5, the Alberta Government Response team indicated that they would not be able to accept the data collected as they would not be able to ensure the safety of evacuees in private residences nor do they have the staff to manage such an endeavor.

The site will remain online due to being heavily linked in social and traditional media as a means of directing evacuees to evacuation and reception centres, and to provide resources that may be of use.

To all of those that offered space in their homes, I'm humbled by your generosity and kindness.

To those that have been evacuated, many of whom have lost almost everything, my heart goes out to you and I wish you all the best in dealing with this tragedy. Albertans are here now and will be here to help you rebuild in the coming months and years. Stay safe.

No information entered on this site will be sold, rented, shared, or otherwise used for any other purpose than putting people in touch with each other. I will hold the information for another 10 days or so in case it is needed for any reason. Data collected will be destroyed on May 16, 2016.
May 11 Update - Emergency Financial Assistance - Debit Cards

$1,250 per adult and $500 per dependent in emergency financial assistance will be provided to people who have been displaced.

You will be able to obtain the cards starting today at 14:00 and as long as you are in line by 19:55 they will do their best to get you a debit card today. Line ups are expected. If you are able to wait a day or two, it will ensure that those that are in desperate need are able to get their cards first. Pick up points will be open from 08:00 to 20:00 for the next few days.

In addition to the money from the province, the Red Cross has announced a relief package of $600 per adult and $300 per child is to be distributed. If you registered with an email with the Red Cross, you should receive notice of an e-transfer within the next 48 hours. If you had no email address, the Red Cross will reach out to you. If you have yet to register, you'll need to call the Red Cross: 1-888-350-6070
Alberta Government Resource Pick-up Locations:

In Lac La Biche evacuees can get their debit cards at the 'Penalty Box' in the upstairs of the BOLD Centre. Click for map.

In Edmonton, debit cards for evacuees will be handed out starting at 2 p.m. today at the Butterdome on the U of A campus. Click for map. A second location in Edmonton is being looked at and I will send a follow up email with that location when it is announced.

In Calgary, evacuees can get cards at the McMahon Stadium Red & White Club (Click for map) & BMO Centre in Stampede Park (Click for map).

Again - Please wait a day or two if you are able, so that those in desperate need can get their relief cards and start using the funds. Pick-up starts today at 14:00 and goes until 20:00. Open again tomorrow at 08:00.
