Flood waters have receded and authorities are beginning to allow residents to reenter their homes to begin clean up. The City of Austell was devastated when flood waters from several creeks in the area overflowed and flood waters in many areas reached close to 30 feet in many low lying areas. In one area along Sweetwater Creek in Austell, a mobile home park containing about 75 units was completely submerged and many of the mobile homes floated during the peak of the flooding. All of these units were completely destroyed and are condemned along with many other homes in the area. Some 2,500 homes were damaged to some degree with over 700 homes being totally destroyed and condemned. Many residents interviewed by Hearts With Hands stated the water level increased at over two feet per hour during the peak of the rainfall. Many residents also stated that when the evacuation order was given, many had to literally grab what they could and leave. Among the most needed items are picnic supplies and non-perishable foods. Other items include paper goods, baby supplies, diapers, baby food, wipes, cleaning supplies and bleach, mops, brooms, trash bags, plastic sheeting and tarps, hand tools and gloves. In one area along Sweetwater Creek in Austell, a mobile home park containing about 75 units was completely submerged and many of the mobile homes floated during the peak of the flooding. All of these units were completely destroyed and are condemned along with many other homes in the area. Some 2,500 homes were damaged to some degree with over 700 homes being totally destroyed and condemned. Many residents interviewed by Hearts With Hands stated the water level increased at over two feet per hour during the peak of the rainfall. Flood waters have receded and authorities are beginning to allow residents to reenter their homes to begin clean up. The City of Austell was devastated when flood waters from several creeks in the area overflowed and flood waters in many areas reached close to 30 feet in many low lying areas. In one area along Sweetwater Creek in Austell, a mobile home park containing about 75 units was completely submerged and many of the mobile homes floated during the peak of the flooding. All of these units were completely destroyed and are condemned along with many other homes in the area. Some 2,500 homes were damaged to some degree with over 700 homes being totally destroyed and condemned. Many residents interviewed by Hearts With Hands stated the water level increased at over two feet per hour during the peak of the rainfall. Many residents also stated that when the evacuation order was given, many had to literally grab what they could and leave. Among the most needed items are picnic supplies and non-perishable foods. Other items include paper goods, baby supplies, diapers, baby food, wipes, cleaning supplies and bleach, mops, brooms, trash bags, plastic sheeting and tarps, hand tools and gloves.
