Situation Report Southeast Flooding, 23 Sep 2009
Source: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA)
Date: 23 Sep 2009
A tropical air mass that has been draped across the southeastern United States coupled with a nearly stationary upper-level weather system has caused widespread precipitation throughout several southeastern states. Torrential rains from this system falling on saturated soil caused flooding and flash flooding throughout parts of Alabama, eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina and Georgia.
Areas most impacted
In Georgia, at least 3,000 homes have sustained damage from the floods, with assessments on hold in many areas until water recedes. More than 300 people remain in emergency shelters, and voluntary agencies have set up 18 feeding sites across the state. Seventeen Georgia counties are affected.
Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue has petitioned President Obama for federal disaster assistance.
PDA Response
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has been in contact with the Cherokee Presbytery and Greater Atlanta Presbytery in Georgia to offer assistance in the form of One Great Hour of Sharing funds or other help as needs are identified. National Response Team (NRT) member the Reverend Ken McKenzie is working with the affected presbyteries to help in their response. Additional NRT members will be arriving to assist Ken in this mission.
McKenzie is pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rome, Georgia. Westminster will be the distribution site for 860 Hygiene Kits, 500 Emergency Clean-up Buckets, 200 Emergency Blankets, 2,010 School Kits, 4,600 protective latex gloves and 1,500 protective masks from Church World Service. The estimated value of these material resources is $81,322.

Good morning, Terra.
As a matter of fact, I am on the GA response. Right now I am in Rome, preparing to contact all of our area pastors. I will be here until Thursday. We will be discussing having churches host work teams, etc. as well as participating in planning for the long term recovery.
I am kind of in an out, since I have responsibilities in NC as well.
Thanks for asking!

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has a 70 member National Response Team which deploys to all types of disasters at the request of regional governing bodies, called Presbyteries. The April Storms impacted two Presbyteries within Georgia: The Presbytery of Greater Atlanta and Cherokee Presbytery. (The metro area and NW GA, respectively) The mission of NRT is to conduct preliminary assessments and recommend responses to the national office of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. The mission beyond NRT is two-fold: the establishment of volunteer villages (Hope through Hospitality) and helping to organize and maintain LTROs.

The estimated value of these material resources is $81,322.
Westminster Presbyterian Church is certified as a shelter for people and pets and stands ready to serve in those capacities should the need arise.
