Notes:

4/19/11 from article posted from WLTZ News
BIRMINGHAM, AL, April 18, 2011 – The weekend was filled with severe weather and damage spreading from Oklahoma to Virginia. Approximately 200 tornadoes occurred over three days and more than 40 deaths have been attributed to the storms.

In Alabama, Governor Bentley declared a state of emergency and damage was wide-spread from Washington County in the southeastern part of the state to Tuscaloosa in the northwest. As of now seven deaths in Alabama have been linked to the severe weather system and approximately 130 homes in the state have been damaged or destroyed.

The Red Cross was on scene minutes after the tornadoes passed to provide relief and assistance and continues its work today. The work being done by your Red Cross includes:

•Damage assessment in affected areas to ensure we identify each and every person who needs help.
•Caseworkers are beginning to meet with survivors in affected areas to assist them with immediate, emergency disaster caused needs.
•One shelter remains open in Geiger, Alabama; a town about an hour south of Tuscaloosa which sustained heavy damage.
•Mobile feeding of hot meals and snacks as well as the distribution of clean up kits is ongoing. The Red Cross has nine Emergency Response Vehicles stationed throughout the state for this purpose and they were used to respond immediately.
•Additional trained staff and volunteers and supplies are arriving daily to help with the response effort.
•A Disaster Operations Center has been set up in the Birmingham area and additional staging areas are located closer to the affected areas.
•Disaster Mental Health workers are working with storm survivors to offer emotional support and help them deal with the stress disasters can cause.

The Red Cross is committed to providing the assistance so many people desperately need. "Families have lost everything, and we are doing what we can to help them as they figure out what's next," said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president, Red Cross Disaster Services. "We'll continue to help them in the weeks ahead as they try to get back on their feet."
