The seeds of La Via Campesina was sown in 1992 in Nicaragua, during the organization of the third Continental Meeting of the 500 years of indigenous, Afro-descendant and popular resistance, as an expression of struggle, resistance and articulation to build an international movement capable of giving voice and resonance to peasants from all over the world, having as common objectives: an explicit rejection of the neoliberal model of rural development, an unquestionable rejection of being excluded from the development of agricultural policy and the determination “not to disappear”.

This common interest and commitment gave rise to the Managua Declaration, signed by representatives of eight peasant organizations from Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, Canada and the United States, who met to participate in the Second Congress of the National Union of Farmers and Ranchers (UNAG), also held in Managua on April 25 and 26, 1992.

These meetings led to fundamental episodes in the history of LVC such as the organization of the Continental Campaign for 500 years of Indigenous, Afro-descendant and Popular Resistance and the meeting that marked the beginning of the Latin American Coordination of Rural Organizations (CLOC) and the Declaration of Managua that gave rise to La Via Campesina.
