Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes; the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to address basic human needs. In addition to these services, the core of Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families to enable them to resume their normal daily activities independently.

The Red Cross also feeds emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.

Disaster Alert: Severe Weather and Wildfire in South Dakota
July 22, 2012

Disaster Alert

South Dakota– A severe storm with possible tornado activity destroyed homes, damaged others and left residents in the Pine Ridge Reservation without power late Saturday night.

The Black Hills Area Chapter communicated with local officials deployed team members and provided individual assistance to disaster victims.

Additionally, the Iron Shell Fire burned hundreds of acres, closed roads, threatened homes and prompted the evacuation of residents within the affected area of Todd County on Saturday.

The Black Hills Area Chapter deployed Disaster Action Team members, dispatched a disaster trailer, opened a shelter and provided Mass Care for scores of evacuees.
