Animal Control

Just like your car needs to be registered, so does your dog. It’s pertinent to your pet’s health to be up to date on its rabies and booster vaccinations. Your beloved pet might not leave your yard, but wildlife may enter your yard and infect your pet with rabies and distemper virus. Help keep your pet safe by vaccinating, and licensing your pet today. We offer low cost vaccination clinics to the residents of Duarte every year in the month of June. Remember to spay or neuter your pet, dogs get a 50 percent discount per year on licensing.

Times are hard with the economy, so don’t take the risk of being cited for having an unlicensed dog. It could cost you precious time and money you can’t afford to lose. The dog licensing period runs from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.

Should you have any further questions, please contact the Public Safety Department at (626) 357-7938. We are located at 1042 Huntington Drive, Duarte, CA 91010. Animal Control Officers are on-duty Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Friday through Saturday 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Animal Control Emergencies

Emergencies regarding wildlife or pets can be directed to Duarte Animal Control at (626) 357-7938. When the Public Safety Office is closed, please contact the Los Angeles County Animal control at (626) 962-3577. When life- threatening situations involving animals occur, in addition to the above, contact Temple Sheriff's Station at (626) 448- 9861.

Dog Licensing Fees

All dogs over the age of 4 months are required to be licensed. A rabies vaccination certificate, which is valid for the entire licensing period, and a certificate of sterility (if applicable) are required to license your pet. License fees are $25 for spayed and neutered pets, or $48 for unaltered pets. Licenses are due annually on July 1st. Licenses purchased after August 31st are subject to a $50.00 penalty. Seniors over the age of 65 are entitled to one free license per household for a spayed or neutered dog. Licenses may be purchased at the Public Safety Office (Cash or Check) or at Duarte City Hall (Cash, Check, or Credit Card).

Frequently Asked Questions

Who do I call if I have an animal related question?

All animal related questions should be directed to the Public Safety Department at (626) 357-7938 Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Friday through Saturday 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m

My pet is missing, what do I do?

Contact the Public Safety Department at (626) 357-7938 and provide a detailed description of the lost animal. Then, check online at: LA County Animal Control (Baldwin Park).

What happens when a stray dog is located by Animal Control Officers?

Identification of stray dogs is easy when animals are properly licensed and the license is affixed to their collar. In these cases, officers can quickly locate the pet’s owner and return them safely home. Animals with microchip technology will be scanned by the officer to determine their identity and returned to their owner. Unidentified animals are taken to LA County Animal Control in Baldwin Park and sheltered until claimed by the owner. A photograph of the animal and identifying information is placed on the Shelter's website LA County Animal Control (Baldwin Park) to assist owner identification and retrieval. They can also be reached by phone at (626) 962-3577.

Are officers trained to deal with dogs, cats, rabbits, opossum, raccoons, birds, snakes, chickens, rats, mice, hamsters, squirrels, goats, pigs, deer and bears?

Animal Control Officers are equipped and trained to handle these and many other types of animals. However, wildlife indigenous to the foothills of Duarte is the responsibility of California Fish and Game. Animal Control Officers may be called to assist with these types of animal related calls, and liaison with Fish and Game officials who have jurisdiction over these matters. Should you have any questions for the Department of Fish and Game, please call (858) 467-4201.

I was bitten, what should I do?

Seek appropriate medical attention as necessary and refer to Animal Control Emergencies listed above. Get the correct address where the animal lives so that Animal Control Officers may quarantine the pet. Call us immediately if the dog is still running loose.

Public Safety is closed, who do I call?

When Duarte Animal Control Officers are no longer available for routine calls for service (IE: dead animal, loose dog, injured animal, etc.), contact the LA County Animal Control at: (626) 962-3577.
