Feeding America: Responding in Times of Crisis

Feeding America, through Ozarks Food Harvest and six network members serving Missouri, is responding to the emergency food assistance needs of people impacted by tornadoes that devastated Joplin, MO on May 22

The majority of residents have no power, and most areas, including the local hospital, has no running water. Many people are moving in with family and friends, but food is starting to spoil. We anticipate a dramatic increase in need for food for the weeks and months ahead as people try to pick up the pieces of their lives. Our food bank network has assembled supplies estimated at $650,000 in just the past two days. As shelters disband, many people will be looking for food assistance for the very first time.

Feeding America has been working to support relief efforts in the regions impacted by record flooding and tornado outbreaks since April. As the men, women, and children effected by these storms attempt to put their lives back together our network will continue to be in emergency mode to address the additional demand for food and grocery items for many months to come.

Our Relief Efforts

Feeding America is responding to the tornados, flooding and severe storms in 11 affected states.

Our Logistics Team has achieved some success arranging for donated or reduced rate transportation to move these supplies to the affected areas in the most cost-efficient manner, but the high price of fuel continues to be a significant factor in the cost of supporting Member food banks responding to crisis in communities throughout the region.

Feeding America is also working with its corporate and foundation partners, and individual donors, to deliver hope to victims of the recent deadly tornadoes in the South and the flooding that is devastating many areas of the Midwest.
