MISSION STATEMENT:

This shelter is a Christian-based program developed to provide a warm, safe and clean environment for those who are homeless, and have no options for shelter during the cold inclement months of the year.

Cold Weather Shelter Ready to Reopen -
On Friday, December 3rd, 2010, the Chambersburg Cold Weather Drop
in Shelter will begin the 7th year of service to the community operating
as a faith-based effort, receiving no borough, county or state funds.
Area churches have been very supportive of the shelter operations
through the past six years.

The procedures that operated successfully last season will remain in
effect with a few minor changes. The shelter, located at 195 Loudon
Street will accommodate 14 men and 6 women from 7pm to 7am seven
days a week until the first weekend in April 2011. Since there are
other shelters in the area that accept children, this shelter will adhere to
its policy of not accepting children. House rules will be made known to
guests as they arrive.

Volunteers will be required again for the evening shift – 7pm to
midnight – 3 volunteers required. To volunteer for an evening shift,
send a g-mail to ccwdis.org@ gmail.com. These volunteers will be
coordinated by Craig Newcomer, the Shelter Manager – phone 717 830-
3487.

Similar to previous years, local organizations and church groups will be
asked to bring in a hot meal each evening at 7pm for the guests. Open
spots in the meal schedule can be seen by going to the shelter’s home
page at ccwdis.org, and clicking on EVENING MEALS.

In preparation for the opening night, the floor of the women’s section
needed painting, and there was some paint touch-up work to be done.
Thanks to Bill McKelvie and the Evening Lion’s Club, the work was
well done.
More than a hot meal and a warm bed for guests, the shelter staff will
counsel guests and aid them in finding more permanent housing. The
guests may be directed to service agencies that will address their
problems.

FOOD DONATIONS
The current list of evening meal providers is available by clicking on MEAL PROVIDERS in the blue panel to the left. You'll see the current meal providers and available dates. To provide a meal, send an e-mail to ccwdis@ gmail.com with your name, phone number and the evening of your choice. Sunday nights have traditionally been served at the Falling Spring Presbyterian church and Thursday nights at 1st United Methodist.

VOLUNTEERING
To volunteer at the shelter, first click on VOLUNTEER SCHEDULE in the blue panel on the left. Then click on the month of your choice. A calendar will show the dates and times of available openings. Select a date and time, then e-mail ccwdis@ gmail.com or the shelter manager, with your choice. Your name will be posted to the on-line file that you can reach by typing in CCWDIS.org.
