Since its creation in 1960, the mission of Terre des hommes (Tdh) has been to come to the aid of children in need. It endeavours at all times to defend the rights of children, in times of war and natural disasters, or in less publicised situations of distress.
Today, the Terre des hommes Foundation is a significant force among children’s aid organisations in Switzerland and throughout the world. It is the largest non-governmental organisation (NGO) for children’s aid in Switzerland. Tdh has development projects and emergency relief programmes in more than 30 countries. This engagement is financed by individual and institutional donations, of which 85% flows directly into the Tdh programmes.

The situation on the front of the epidemic of Cholera in the department of the South and in particular in the town of Cayes is extremely worrying. The health services are totally obsolete while the number of cases is constantly increasing and that no major medical humanitarian agency is not present in the area. The fourth city of country does not have today treatment center at the measurement of the humanitarian crisis which is increasing.
The agglomeration of Les Cayes account a global population of more than 320'000 inhabitants. The city is significantly from the size of Cap Haitien. Urban areas are densely populated areas, the populations the poorest live in the vicinity of river mouths, without any sanitation system. With its channels of evacuation open skies and the major part of the city center located flood area to, Les Cayes presents high risk of contamination (see map DINEPA).
The number of persons contaminated in the department of the South, even if it remains in absolute terms well below the number of cases recorded in Port au Prince or in the Department of Nord, is constantly increasing. Until now, in the whole of the department, 12 outbreaks of contamination , including 5 located in the city, have been identified. Official figures state of 160 cases treated, but they are largely under-evaluated.
The health authorities have been made destitute face the outbreak program and already sorely lacking the means, human and material, to face a situation which is constantly to worsen.
Located in the enclosure of the hospital, the CTU transitional has a capacity of only 25 beds. Women, men and children do not have spaces separated. Managed by staff insufficiently trained and overloaded, missing of supervision, it saves 10 15 admissions daily since a few days. It is completely saturated. The inmates of the central prison are also referred to it.
All indicators show that the epidemic will explode in the city of Cayes. It is already beginning to strike the surrounding agglomerations. There is an urgent need for mobilization of actors medical and WASH in order to build in the shortest possible time CLC to a minimum of 100 beds, dimensioned to the needs of a city of 140 000 inhabitants and thus to avoid that the situation in South is out of control. The MINISTRY lack of means and penalty to mobilize its staff.

3 Dec 2010 - Cholera in Haiti: Tdh mobilizes against the epidemic
Launched on Monday 29th November, the mobilization appeal of Terre des hommes against cholera has not remained unanswered. Three specialists from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (attached to the SDC) are a hand to our team against the epidemic since early December, together with the doctor already lent to Tdh by the University Hospitals of Geneva. Two other experts are expected to join soon.
In Les Cayes (South) the third city of Haiti, MSF Holland will assure the medical component of the Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC). Soon, the equipment needed to treat 2’000 sick people, requested to the SDC, will land on the island by cargo aircraft.
Michel Roulet, a pediatrician who has experienced several outbreaks in humanitarian contexts, said: “I had some concerns last month on the capacity to meet the new health crisis. I note today that Tdh teams react with skill and intelligence to care for the sick and to prevent communities. The CTC of Grand Goave, which includes a hundred beds, is remarkably conducted with the support of other NGOs.”
Tdh collaborates with Medecins du Monde, Medecins sans Frontieres and with the Haitian Ministry of Health and Population to curb the epidemic.
The World Health Organization has revised its forecast: cholera would reach up to 400’000 people by next April with a peak expected in late December. Among those people, one in twenty could die.

While the article is a bit exaggerated, i think we should prepare for the worst and plan to support the CTC and Hopitale Immaculee Conception (HIC) in Les Cayes.

I am entering the information based on your comments and the article into the CAT dbase as well as our new Google Spreadsheet Watchgroup which documents all the sites we are giving attention to. I have a few questions if you don't mind that you might be able to provide clarity on.
I scanned the article carefully, and find no direct information on the Hopital Immaculee Conception. Can you verify if that site is the one that is referenced being run by MSF & TDH?
-Did the MSPP director indicate any truth to MSF withdrawing?
-Is the report yesterday from Paul Rudenberg on the HEAS correct in stating that the Les Cayes General Hospital is in fact an officially designated "CTC"?
-Can you tell me if Les Cayes General Hospital & Hopital Imaculee Conception are run by MSPP?
-Are MSPP's resources solid enough to respond, or are they officially reaching out to equipped NGO's to fill gaps? If so, is there any word on response by a particular organization to respond immediately?
-What I am trying to determine is if Les Cayes should be rated as a 'level 1' we should activate an immediate response for by HEAS member ground teams.
-Also, do you happen to have any point of contact names, numbers, emails for both
