Her water source is apparently a communal water source; she also has not traveled. This water source in this tent city should likely be investigated. The other is a 33 year old woman who lives in a tent city not 10 minutes from Hospital Bernard Mevs that is called Cite Renord. Her water source is apparently a communal water source; she also has not traveled. This water source in this tent city should likely be investigated. We have one gentleman who rapid tested negative, but the diarrhea is just copious amounts of water. We will bring all specimans to the National lab for verification as per their protocol. Toni Eyssallenne, MD, PhD Chief Medical Officer Hospital Bernard Mevs/Project Medishare ------------------------------------ POSTED ON HEAS 11/8/10: Just wanted to report that I have received confirmation of a case of cholera here in Port au Prince at Hospital Bernard Mevs. The case is as follows: 3 year old boy with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea for less than one day (he was brought the same day his symptoms started). The physicians that cared for him described him as severely dehydrated and gave him IV fluids and doxycycline. He rehydrated well overnight and they continued with oral rehydration and he was sent home with oral rehydration and hygeine instructions. The stool was watery grey. Since it was our first credible case, we took the sample to the national lab on Delmas 33 and I received the report today that the stool was culture positive for vibrio cholerae 01. I called the patient's father and he said he is much better although he has not regained his appetite. He presented on 10/31/10, he is from a tent city near Route Batiment across the street from a place that sells macaroni. They have not travelled in over a year and have had no contact with anyone from the Artibonite region or St. Marc.
