Mission: What is ARES?

* ARES is part of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the largest amateur radio advocacy and fraternal organization in the United States. Today, ARES provides the organization and guidance to help amateur radio operators to establish a local emergency communications group. Emergency Coordinators work with local government agencies such as police, fire, sheriff, search and rescue and offices of emergency management to determine what emergency communications needs may exist.

* Colorado ARES is divided into 29 districts. Not all are active. Each active district will have a local Emergency Coordinator who will work to understand the local community's needs, and organize resources to maintain a level of emergency preparedness.

* Although the primary purpose of ARES is to provide emergency communications, ARES members also routinely provide non-business communications support to other public events.

The Colorado ARES Disaster Response Team (DRT) is a mobile and portable emergency communications unit with its own staff and resources, designed to bring ARES organization and communication support to emergency management in areas of the state that do not have an active emergency communications group. The DRT is also available to provide mutual aid in the form of additional or specialized resources to existing ARES or RACES groups when requested.

The DRT is organized and authorized as an independent mobile/portable district within the Colorado Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARESCO). Steve Finch (AIØW) serves as ARES Emergency Coordinator (EC). The DRT complies fully with provisions of the Colorado Emergency Radio Plan (COPLAN).

The DRT was first authorized on February 28, 2004 and procedural development is an ongoing process - information on this website is a "work-in-progress" and will be updated and revised as development progresses.
