Floods in Pakistan

Since July 30, the arrival of monsoon flooding in the valley of the Indus. Especially in the provinces of KPK (NW Pakistan), where Médecins du Monde since 2009 provides humanitarian assistance to populations displaced by military operations. Flooding also affected the Punjab, Balochistan and "tribal areas" of Pakistan.

It is the greatest episode of flooding since 1929.

The recent figures are alarming. There are more than 1,600 dead or missing, mostly in the province of KPK, and nearly 14 million people were affected. In the region of the KPK, 90% of homes were "totally or partially flooded. "Health facilities are paralyzed, cases of diarrhea have doubled compared to the period before flood" reports our team.

Teams MdM

In Pakistan, Medecins du Monde has a national team of 192 people. Among the local team, some people were already working with MdM in the earthquake of 2005.

National medical and logistics personnel: 185 (106 before the floods)
7 Medical personnel and logistics from France: 7

Activities

Medecins du Monde has deployed two mobile medical teams covering 50,000 people, Nowshera, Charsadda and continued his previous actions in Swabi and Kohat. (Programme humanitarian assistance to people displaced by military operations.)

These mobile teams are designed to enhance three primary health centers where the number of consultations has exploded.

In terms of health, it appears that the main needs are to:

-strengthening of health facilities in difficulties following the floods
-the treatment of acute diarrhea cases in which the number increases significantly
-anticipation and prevention of epidemics such as cholera and malaria medium term
