Mission: What is GOAL?

GOAL is an international humanitarian agency dedicated to alleviating the suffering of the poorest of the poor. We are a non-denominational, non-governmental and non-political organisation.
Our History:

GOAL was founded in Dublin in 1977 by former sports journalist and Chief Executive, John O’Shea.

Since its inception, GOAL has spent close to €650 million on humanitarian programmes in almost 50 countries. Over 2,000 GOALies and many thousands of local staff have worked in the developing world on GOAL’s behalf and the organisation has responded to every major humanitarian disaster since 1977.
Where are our operations?

GOAL currently has in excess of 100 GOALies based in 11 countries: Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Haiti.

Across GOAL’s fields of operation, 2,500 locally-based staff are employed alongside the GOALies, where together they deliver on a range of humanitarian programmes. GOALies come from all walks of life: accountants, nurses, doctors, nutritionists, logisticians, engineers, administrative personnel, and so on.

GOAL is established in Sindh province in Pakistan and is providing life-saving support to some of the millions of people most affected by the devastating floods.

We are working with local NGO HANDS to support the emergency evacuation of the displaced populations by road and boat and providing water and food to some of those most in need of assistance.

Over the coming days, GOAL plans to continue this work and distribute crucial non-food items such as clothes, blankets, mosquito nets, cooking equipment and plastic sheeting for emergency shelter, while other assistance will be provided in the form of sanitation and medical support.

Up to three million people have been affected in Sindh province alone since the disaster began. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced by the floods in the province, the majority of them in the north, where GOAL is working.

More than 1,600 people have been confirmed dead across the country. Between 15 and 20 million people have been affected in total and more than two million have been made homeless.

GOAL's emergency response team in Pakistan is delivering vital life-saving support to thousands of people most affected by the ongoing devastating floods.

GOAL has based its operations in Sindh province in the south-east of the country. Over the coming days, the aid agency plans to distribute food and crucial non-food items such as clothes, blankets, mosquito nets, cooking equipment and plastic sheeting for emergency shelter, while other assistance will be provided in the form of water, sanitation and medical support.

GOAL is also supporting the emergency evacuation of the displaced populations by road and boat.

"The crisis is still unfolding here – the floods are spreading and hundreds of thousands of people are being forced to vacate their homes, said GOAL's Emergency Co-ordinator in Pakistan, Brian Casey.

"I witnessed one village being washed away right in front of me yesterday. The needs are colossal, the roads are full of people moving away from the floods – some families have moved four or five times and have lost assets on each occasion.

"Others have stopped at informal camps that are hugely overcrowded. In one case over two thousand people were sharing two latrines and people had to resort to open defecation," added Mr. Casey.
