How NWF is Helping Wildlife Impacted by the BP Oil Spill

The National Wildlife Federation has been on the front lines responding to the wildlife crisis unfolding in the Gulf since the BP Oil Spill started on April 20.

Our Louisiana-based staff--already working on existing Coastal Louisiana restoration efforts before the spill--was deployed to help with the initial response. They have been joined by national staff, affiliates in the region and a growing network of volunteers.

We believe strongly we have an obligation to find out what is happening, share this information with the public and do everything we can to help wildlife survive this tragedy.

What We are Doing:

1. We are expanding the "Search" in "Search and Rescue"

NWF, along with its five Gulf state affiliates and other partners, are establishing an extensive Gulf Coast Volunteer Surveillance Network to track and report on the impacts of the oil spill, support wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts, and restore damaged delicate coastal ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico.

We are recruiting people in the Gulf area with developed wildlife observation skills (birders, hunters, anglers) and with a respectable knowledge of local lands and waters.

Volunteer for National Wildlife Federation's Gulf Coast Surveillance Teams

In response to the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the National Wildlife Federation, its five Gulf state affiliates, and other partners are establishing an extensive volunteer wildlife surveillance network to track and report on the impacts of the oil spill, support wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts, and restore damaged delicate coastal ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico.

We are looking to recruit volunteers who are:

* Skilled in wildlife observation and tracking (bird-watchers, naturalists, or sportsmen).
* Knowledgeable about the Gulf Coast and its waters.
* Know many of the species of birds, fish, turtles, marine mammals and other animals that will be at risk from the oil spill.
* Preferably local to one of the surveillance locations.
