Located in the country’s southern coast, Jacmel, suffered extensive causalities as well as left it littered with crumbled buildings after the January 12, 7.0 earth quake.

Mother Health International sent a team of seven medics and midwives on January 28, 2010 to Jacmel, Haiti via Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic to offer disaster relief to women and children. With the help of the Dominican Republic’s Chamber of Commerce were were provided thousands of pounds of medical supplies and food plus offered a place on the DR Navy boat which was traveling to Jacmel. Shortly after arriving, we recognized the great need beyond disaster aid and began the process to build a maternal birth clinic in the heart of one of the most under served areas in Haiti, St. Helen Parish. On March 10, 2010 we officially opened our doors to pregnant women and started doing prenatal evaluations immediately.

Our birth clinic is the one and only, midwifery modeled birth clinics to serve birthing women and children in Jacmel. With the blessings of the Haitian Minister of Health, MHI has been granted a license from the Haitian government to operate our birth clinic. We have also been granted by the Haitian government official NGO status in Haiti.

Our birth center is housed in a 44 ft dome structure (1500 sq. feet) on a piece of land with a small house in front of it. The house serves as our office and sleeping quarters for our volunteers. A dome is a geometric structure that is able to withstand high winds and earth quakes.

Community Outreach Educational Programs in Haiti
With the blessings of the Haitian Minister of Education, we have created programs to train community educators who will receive certification to facilitate community-based education workshops, on well mother health, in neighborhoods surrounding Jacmel. We have also created educational programs for the pregnant women who are receiving care from our clinic. They include classes on breastfeeding, natural child birth, infant care, nutrition, sexual abuse awareness, and peaceful child parenting. In addition, we developing a training program that will certify Haitian women as Certified Professional Midwives (CPM). These CPM’s will have the opportunity to work for Mother Health International and be paid for their midwifery services.

Birth Statistics in Haiti and the Need for the Mother Health International Model of Care
