notes: from website: Latest News Public Notice August 29, 2012 After looking at the latest storm projections, Plaquemines Parish officials, Plaquemines Parish Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department along with GOHSEP, the Governor’s Office, CPRA, the National Guard, state police, the Coast Guard, the US Army Corps of Engineers, have decided to order a mandatory evacuation from the Oakville Flood Gate on Hwy 23 to Venice. Residents are urged to evacuate this area. A shelter will open at the YMCA in Belle Chasse located at 8101 Hwy 23. The shelter will open at noon today. Hwy 23 is open to traffic. If you can get to the shelter on your own please do so. If there is water on your street and you feel unsafe traveling on your own please call 911 and a sheriff’s deputy will transport you and your family to the shelter safely. Water will start rising this afternoon and could exceed the height of the levees. The new models are a result of the storm continuing to push water for long periods of time. Please heed warnings and evacuate as soon as possible or call 911 for assistance.
