FROM THE WEBSITE (Date of update unknown):
The earthquake in Haiti is a disaster of unimaginable proportions. We have spent many anxious days waiting for word from our orphanage and schools there and finally received an email Thursday saying that the children and workers were unhurt and there was not much damage to the structures. The House of Hope ministry is located about 40 miles north of Port-au-Prince, so we are thankful that it escaped the worst of the damage.
Some of our partners for the House of Hope have gone into Port-au-Prince to aid in rescue efforts and hand out water and medicine. Amazingly, we took a group to Haiti just a week before the earthquake, and a couple from Ord, Nebraska, who owns a pharmacy, donated large amounts of medicine. Praise God, they have been able to use it to help injured people in Port-au-Prince.
Of great concern, though, is that there is no food to be found right now in Haiti. I received an email this morning that all of the stores are either destroyed or closed for security reasons. Food aid has not yet become available. Please pray that the aid will come through soon, and that security will be restored soon so that stores can open.
We are also very concerned for the number of orphans that this disaster has created. There are already over 200,000 orphans in Haiti, and the number is expected to be much higher. We have directed our partners there to take in as many orphans as they can now, so we can house them temporarily at the orphanage and other sites that we have.
Our plan over the next weeks and months is to build another orphanage that can house 50 more children. We expect that we will need to raise about $25,000 to build it, and that to support the children, we will need to find sponsors who are willing to give $40/month for each child.
