A relief volunteer in Birmingham, AL approached local United States Post Office and they agreed to GIVE HER all the baby formula powders/liquid SAMPLES that are undeliverable to addresses that come back to their facilities. By law, they cannot return it to the sender. So it just sits there useless.
I don't know about other types of samples, but if you are collecting items to help individual families or to ship for distribution, ask your local post offices if they have other samples they can give to you to help survivors (ie. razors, toiletries, personal hygiene, etc.).

Hello All,
Katrina's Angels was approached by a lady who's approached her local post office in Birmingham and they've agreed to GIVE HER all the baby formula powders/liquid that are undeliverable to addresses that come back to their facilities. By law, they cannot return it to the sender. So it just sits there useless.
Now she said nothing about other types of samples, but if you are collecting items to help individual families or to ship for distribution, it certainly would not hurt to ask your local post offices if they have other samples they can give to you to help survivors (ie. razors, toiletries, etc.).
Just a head's up. I'd appreciate outcome results if any of you approach your post offices to see how they respond. I am going to try to get into at least two of my local P.O.'s over the weekend.
In Service,
Leslie Teltoe

Well the person that approached us found us on your database. I think she just tripped over the concept. I've emailed everyone I think can benefit that is collecting distribution or helping families directly.
Maybe this falls more under some generalized 'tip' or 'resource' category as opposed to pinpointing one person in AL that found a post office that was willing to pass on these samples. I really don't know yet if she just got lucky and it's only this particular P.I. that has cooperated with her. That's why I wanted everyone to try it and get back to me. I'll be very interested in the overall results.
Oh and this reminds of someone way back when that suggested we contact each of our local Red Cross Chapters. Apparently they get a LOT of donations they can't do anything with because of the way their programs are designed and if you get a hold of the 'right person' it could be a gold mine of donations they'll give away.
