Emergency Communities is no longer accepting volunteers on the Gulf Coast. We are directing all of our volunteers to join our sister organization, LowerNine.Org, which is continuing our work of rebuilding the Lower Ninth Ward. Please visit their website for more information on volunteering.
Open! The Goin' Home Cafe, Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans - Our new site is finally open, right in the heart of the Lower 9th Ward. In a way, this area was the epicentre of the Katrina disaster, but it is also an area of a tight-knit, determined, and strong community with a will to return. We are helping them on that quest with free meals, laundry services, gutting, internet, children's programs, and anything else that is asked of us.

Emergency Communities is now accepting volunteer applications for
early fall 2007.
Since January, E.C. has been operating a community recovery center
in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. We serve hundreds of local
residents everyday. We are working hard with volunteers from around
the country to provide this community with several free services
including:
-three hot meals a day
-house gutting, yard work and residential street clean-up
-residential home rebuilding
-internet access and long-distance phones
-laundry facilities
-kid-friendly, family-oriented weekly events and barbecues
-an after school program for children of the Lower Nine
Emergency Communities has operated four relief and recovery centers
throughout the New Orleans area since Hurricane Katrina and has
served over 300,000 meals and assisted over 25,000 residents.
We welcome volunteers of all skill-levels and walks of life.
Skilled labor (electrical, plumbing, sheet-rocking, general
carpentry) and previous kitchen experience are both greatly
appreciated.
For more information and an application, please email Kate at: volunteer@emergencycommunities.org
We look forward to hearing from you!

The United Way and the government of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana invited us to open a new free kitchen and community center in Buras, the town where Hurricane Katrina first made landfall. Our relief operation served its first meal on June 1st and is now serving three hot meals to over 200 residents daily. We are operating a free Laundromat and internet café to accompany our kids’ space, showers and air-conditioned community spaces for the local residents. Come volunteer!

Open! The Y Café, Buras, Plaquemines Parish, LA, May, 2006-?.

-------------------- -> FROM CRAIGSLIST 9/16/07:
Emergency Communities is now accepting volunteer applications for
early fall 2007.
Since January, E.C. has been operating a community recovery center
in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. We serve hundreds of local
residents everyday. We are working hard with volunteers from around
the country to provide this community with several free services
including:
-three hot meals a day
-house gutting, yard work and residential street clean-up
-residential home rebuilding
-internet access and long-distance phones
-laundry facilities
-kid-friendly, family-oriented weekly events and barbecues
-an after school program for children of the Lower Nine
Emergency Communities has operated four relief and recovery centers
throughout the New Orleans area since Hurricane Katrina and has
served over 300,000 meals and assisted over 25,000 residents.
We welcome volunteers of all skill-levels and walks of life.
Skilled labor (electrical, plumbing, sheet-rocking, general
carpentry) and previous kitchen experience are both greatly
appreciated.
For more information and an application, please email Kate at: volunteer@emergencycommunities.org
We look forward to hearing from you!

Greetings beautiful volunteers! I am writing from the New Waveland Cafe in Waveland, Mississippi. We (a loosely knit bunch of rainbow family, alternative types, and folks without a political or religious agenda) have been serving food here since Katrina and Rita hit, wiping out much of this community. To read more about Waveland Cafe, go to:
http://risingfromruin.msnbc.com/2005/11/meals_and_dance.html
After Thanksgiving, under a newly formed non-profit called Emergency Communities, a group of us are moving our kitchen to St. Bernard's Parish to coninue our work there for twelve weeks. St. Bernard's Parish is located right next to the 9th Ward in New Orleans, the hardest hit area of the entire city. We will be feeding thousands of people three hot meals a day as this community begins to return home. We will be set up next to the Civic Center in a 15-acre park. For more info on Emergency Communities, please visit:
http://www.emergencycommunities.org/index.php
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!!! If you are feeling a desire come down and make a real difference in the lives of people who have lost everything, PLEASE come. Come for as long as you want, everyday helps. You can expect to help with making food (often organic, always wholesome and yummy), serve food, do dishes, and generally lend a hand where needed. We will also have a C.A.L.M. tent (center for alternative living medicine), so if you are a healer, massage therapist, yoga instructor, etc. we need your skills too!
Volunteers should bring camping gear (it's been getting cold here, so be prepared), and be prepared for community living in a disaster area....with many loving souls!
I am happy to answer anymore questions you may have. Please email me or call me at 360.510.4847.
Loving blessings to you. Hope to meet you in St. Bernard's!
Shannon

Bernard's!
Shannon
