Paul Furrh, LSLA’s chief executive officer, says a training program for lawyers and other volunteers is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 22 in the Houston offices of Baker Botts. The Houston Bar Association, Volunteers Lawyers and LSLA are jointly sponsoring the three-hour to four-hour training program, which will provide CLE credits to participating lawyers. As part of an outreach program to its 29-county service area walloped by Ike on Sept. 12, LSLA plans to send two-lawyer teams to shelters housing storm evacuees, Furrh says. Referring to Ike's devastation, Furrh says, “This is going to have a huge impact on poor folks.” Furrh says low-income citizens who lived in the storm-ravaged areas probably have lost their jobs and their homes. Helping storm victims with their legal needs likely will take years, Furrh says. “We’re still doing Rita cases,” he says.
