Mission: The mission of the American Lung Association is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health.
The American Lung Association of Mississippi (ALAM) was founded in 1914 to provide services and programs for better lung health for all Mississippians. Originally organized as the Mississippi Tuberculosis Association, dealing strictly with tuberculosis treatment, education and patient services, the association has taken an expanded role to encompass all lung, pulmonary, respiratory diseases and conditions.

Notes:
+ Asthma Camps, Camp Breathe Ezzzze (north) and Camp Wheez-Away (south), provide a fun, safe environment for Mississippi children with asthma. Camps are presented by Northwest Mississippi Medical Center, Baptist Health Systems, the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi and ALAM.
+ The Asthma Coalition of Mississippi (ACM) meets every other month to promote education, prevention and management of asthma throughout the state. The coalition is divided into 9 regional districts that work to achieve six main objectives using the Statewide Asthma Plan.
+ The Mississippi Asthma Summit is the only continuing medical education conference in the state devoted to asthma. The conference is held every other year . This years summit is scheduled for September 15, 2006 the Marriot Hotel in Jackson.
+ Mrs. Claus Has a Cause is a tobacco awareness program designed for first grade students in Mississippi public and private schools. A volunteer, dressed as Mrs. Claus, reads the story of Santa’s littlest elf’s efforts to get Santa to quit smoking his pipe and blow bubbles instead.
+ Not-on-Tobacco is a smoking cessation program for teenagers in Mississippi. The program is designed to help adolescents quit smoking, reduce the number of cigarettes used (unable to quit), and increase healthy lifestyle behaviors in physical activity and nutrition.
+ Better Breathers is a support group for people with respiratory disease and their families. During the meetings, Better Breathers learn more about living with their disease from guest speakers. Meetings are the first Tuesday every month; free lunch is always provided.
+ Boswell /Campbell Lecture is an annual lecture series, held at University of Mississippi Medical Center, devoted to improving and understanding pulmonary medicine.
+ Hungry for Air is a free lung function screening (spirometry test) held to test for the possible
presence of lung obstruction or chronic obstruction pulmonary disease (COPD).

National Asthma Educator Certification Board issues Asthma Educator Certification, allowing one to become an official asthma educator. Asthma educators are experts in counseling asthmatics
Teens Against Tobacco Use (T.A.T.U) is a youth-led mentoring program on tobacco use prevention.
Coaches Care is an asthma program to educate Mississippi coaches and others who supervise athletic activities on asthma symptoms in their student athletes. Coaches learn the dangers of asthma and how to help students reach their athletic potential without endangering their health.
Tuberculosis (TB) Training and Skin Test Certification Course is a cooperative education program sponsored by ALAM and the Mississippi State Department of Health.
Freedom From Smoking and Freedom From Smoking Online (ffsonline.org) includes a 7- session adult smoking cessation program that focuses on positive behavior change and is free of charge.
Lung Help Line is provided from registered nurses, respiratory therapists and quit smoking specialist.

Teach children with asthma how to manage their disease with “Open Airways for Schools” curriculum

Help smokers quit by leading them through our smoking cessation programs
-Fundraising Event Volunteer
Depending on the event, register walkers, decorate for a benefit dinner, address envelopes or hand out T-shirts
-Advocacy Volunteer
Communicate to your community about the importance of lung related legislation; learn how to effect policy change at both state and federal levels
