Our Outreach and Service Mission Statement is:

We are called to reach out, in our service and in our finances, to those outside our faith community who need our help. (See Matthew 25:31-46) As a team, we encourage everyone in the church and community to participate actively in Christian outreach and service, and facilitate and coordinate their participation.

We encourage you to participate in any of the following outreach and service opportunities. Some are opportunities to give financially to those who need our support. Others are opportunities for you to get personally involved in service to others. Either way, these will be experiences of Christian giving of ourselves and our resources that you won’t soon forget. Also see our Outreach and Service Bulletin Board in the upstairs hallway just outside the church office.


PRESBYTERIAN COFFEE PROJECT

The Presbyterian Coffee Project is a new way to help people in need while enjoying fellowship and an excellent cup of coffee. Presbyterian congregations that participate are supporting fair trade--practices which complement our mission with farmers in Latin America, Africa and Asia, as well as our commitment to stewardship of the natural environment. We purchase this coffee for our Fellowship use.

You can purchase coffee at wholesale prices by using the order form on the web or available in Fellowship Hall.

WORSHIP AT WINGATE

Worship at Wingate began in 1990 as a project of PCIS Deacons in response to the concerns of the family of the late Edith Person. Mrs. Person was a devout Presbyterian who had been relocated from Florida to the Wingate Nursing Home in Sudbury and there found herself without an outlet for worship in the tradition meaningful to her. The Wingate worship-fellowship outreach became an immediate success, not only for Edith but also for many other residents of the facility. Worship at Wingate was then and remains to this day the only Protestant worship conducted at the facility.

The Worship at Wingate monthly worship is enthusiastically embraced by residents, and praised by their families and the Wingate staff. The program has grown significantly. From a handful of residents, attendance has more than tripled and now averages 30 and occasionally reaches highs of 40+. Volunteers (many from our Junior, Senior and Confirmation Classes) have led worship, provided music and engaged Wingate residents in fellowship on the third Sunday of each month. Each resident receives a bulletin-order of service with hymns at each service. The Wingate staff notes that many residents keep them at their bedside after the service and between our visits. Special Christmas cards commemorating Christ’s special meaning for older folks were distributed to each resident congregant and special provision is always made for time with those unable to attend the service.

More help is needed, particularly in getting patients/residents from their rooms to the service. Simply put: the more volunteers we have…the more opportunity the Wingate folks will have to get to the only Protestant worship service they have! Volunteers are also needed to provide special music and to lead worship.

The commitment required is generally not more than one hour once a month. If you can help (whether each month or once or twice a year) please contact Pete Raymond or leave a message at the church office 978-443-9151. The need is great. We don’t want to neglect somebody because we haven’t the manpower to get to them. It’s only an hour spent with some wonderful folks for whom the hour means so very much.

SALVATION ARMY MIRACLE KITCHEN

On the second Friday of the month, every two out of three months, our church sponsors a dinnertime meal at the Salvation Army soup kitchen in Framingham. This has proven to be an excellent way that people can become involved in a very rewarding mission. This activity is organized in such a way that there are many ways an individual can participate, yielding a wide variety of opportunities. You can cook a meal, and/or you can help us serve.

Sudbury Food Pantry

The Sudbury Food Pantry supports over 100 families in the Sudbury area.

Please leave any donations of food, soap, diapers, etc. in the baskets in our entryway.

The food pantry needs volunteers to distribute food at the Food Pantry at Our Lady of Fatima Church. If you could volunteer a few hours on 2 to 4 days a month, please contact a member of O&S.

Neighbor to Neighbor

SURPRISED? Yes, there is need right in our own backyard in Sudbury!

Over the last six (6) years, a small portion of our mission dollars have gone to support the “Neighbor To Neighbor” program, a partnership of our church’s Outreach and Service Team with the Town of Sudbury social worker. Did you know that some of the needs satisfied through your offerings were:

· Short term interim medication for an 80 year old widow with breast cancer who could not afford her doctor’s prescribed dosage.

· Life long monitoring (You know: I’ve fallen and I can’t get up) for 6 months for an 82 year widower.

· Hearing aid for single mom, deaf in both ears and unemployed.

· Short term fuel assistance for 79 year old widow whose husband died, and she had no money or understanding how to manage finances.

· Tuition to day camp at Longfellow's Children's Center for a 10 year old with behavior problems.

· Phone bill payments for terminally ill mom, with mentally ill husband and 2 small children.

These are only a sampling of the many short term emergency needs we have been able to respond to through God’s love and your pledges and offerings.

Senior In-Home Fix-It Program: We need people to do very small odd jobs for local elderly who live at home. They need help with such simple things as getting up on step stools to change light bulbs.

Middlesex County Prison Coordinating Committee

An organization that the Outreach and Service Team supports is the Middlesex County Prison Coordinating Committee (MCPCC). This one-of-kind citizen group is composed of members of the faith community who monitor and support programs relating to county-level corrections. The committee is led by a dedicated executive board that meets once a month.

The committee accomplishes much with very little, all toward “a ministry of the whole prison system… The correctional officers, the staff, the administration, and the prisoners.” Some MCPCC activities have included:

Collecting used books for the prison library
Facilitating discussion of prison issues
Collecting winter jackets and sweatshirts
Advocating for chapel space
Supporting a chaplain’s discretionary fund
Encouraging treatment programs for gambling, drug and alcohol abuse
Awarding prizes for art and poetry contests
Advocating on behalf of officers and staff concerning salaries and working conditions

The MCPCC has had a long and successful life thanks in part to our donations through the Outreach and Service Team. Money donated goes toward paying a small stipend to the committee’s coordinator, as well as for other minor expenses including postage for their monthly newsletter.

SEASONAL OUTREACH

January – Roxbury Church Social Impact Center

The RPC Social Impact Center, Inc. is partnering with the Roxbury Presbyterian Church to raise funds to renovate space in the lower level of the Roxbury Presbyterian Church. This space will be used for the Social Impact Center’s existing academically-focused after-school program, for a planned computer education center, for youth outreach, and for other community-focused activities such as poetry readings, drama, etc. In addition, the space will continue to be used for weekly AA meetings and for other community gatherings.

February – Camp Wilmot

This offering supports the Camp Wilmot program. Our contributions go to bringing children to summer camp – children that will not be able to go without some assistance – and other needs of the camp. Many of the campers we once assisted have become the backbone of summer camp at Camp Wilmot and in turn have encouraged an ever growing number of youth from other churches throughout New England to take part.

March – MATE (Mission At The Eastward)

MATE is a cooperative parish which brings together nine congregations in Central Maine, and works with partner congregations from away. Sharing in worship, pastoral ministry and outreach with the larger community, Mission at the Eastward witnesses to the Gospel's promise of wholeness. Our offering supports their housing ministry which rehabilitates housing for people in central Maine who would not otherwise be able to afford to fix up their houses to withstand the Maine winter.

April – One Great Hour of Sharing

Contributions to One Great Hour of Sharing make a difference in the lives of people worldwide. This offering supports the mission work of the Presbyterian Church and our interfaith partners. It provides emergency relief to victims of disasters. Our gifts keep working, helping people to rebuild their villages, their homes, and their lives long after the world’s attention to the immediate disaster is past. Another part of this offering helps poor communities find and develop new sources of food and clean water. We help to improve health standards and literacy. We provide modest loans to poor people seeking to start small businesses in order to become self-supporting. We help resettle refugees from famines and wars, and we provide ministries with homeless children in the inner cities of the world. One Great Hour of Sharing, nearly 50 years old, continues to respond to needs equally critical as when it was first created.

May – Youth mission fund auction

Each May, we hold an auction to raise funds to sponsor our youth on a mission trip. The youth have gone to Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, and other places, where they have helped with housing rehabilitation, repair of church and community facilities, and just making a difference in some peoples’ lives. The funds also sponsor additional youth activities during the year.

June – Little Children of the Philippines

This offering funds the pre-schools of the Little Children of the Philippines, or LCP. The LCP mission is to help impoverished children through strong, caring Christian communities. The building blocks of this mission are the parent empowerment program, the basic health program, the sponsorship program, and the program for handicapped children. In the pre-schools, children come to get a strong foundation for success in formal school. They get a nutritious snack and vitamins to help with persistent malnutrition. They get access to basic health care, and they learn about Jesus.

We encourage you to also sponsor a Philippine child to help them through their school years. Many have contributed this way and have found it to be a great way to help others who cannot help themselves but give back in their own way.

August - MATE

A group of 15-20 people from our church spend a week in Maine working directly on the houses. For example, last summer we replaced uninsulated windows in an elderly woman's trailer, and a drafty front door in an elderly woman's home. This is a great way to become personally involved in helping others and to join others in Christian fellowship.

September and December - Framingham Resource Center

Just before school starts, and just before Christmas, you can Sponsor a Child by buying needed clothing and school supplies. You receive the name and basic information about a child. You shop for that child and we collect our contributions and take them to the center where they are distributed to the children. It is a great way to help a child to be ready for school, or to have a little for Christmas that they would not otherwise have

October - CROP Walk

The 24th Annual CROP Walk for the Hungry takes place in Concord on a Sunday in October. Kicking off at 2:15pm from First Parish in Concord, Lexington Road in the center of Concord, participating walkers will again enjoy the autumn beauty of some of Concord's most historic country roads, as they walk to raise money for the hungry of local communities and around the world. Come early and enjoy music on the First Parish green, starting at 1:30pm in front of First Parish Church.

Local funds raised are allocated to five area community supper/pantry programs: the Open Table in Concord, the Community Supper in Acton; the Sudbury Community Food Pantry, the Maynard Food Pantry, and the Bedford Community Table/Pantry. In addition, the CROP Walk supports Church World Service in its current relief efforts worldwide, including the continuation of the "All Our Children" campaign in Iraq, to provide medical and surgical supplies to hospitals and to fill significant gaps in general health services for youth. Two renovations recently completed were a children's home in Beit al Tutul and the Karbala Pediatric Institute. November – Joshua Matenjwa Presbyterian Church in Limuru, Kenya

We sponsor individual students in Limuru, where they would not be able to go to high school without our support. We provide Christmas dinner and classroom supplies for the church Sunday School.

December –

Christmas Joy fund

Presbyterians have long celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ by giving generously to a Christmas season offering. Fifty percent of the receipts to the Christmas Joy Offering are distributed to the Board of Pensions for assistance programs that provide support to retired and active church workers and their spouses and families. The other fifty percent supports the eight Presbyterian-related racial ethnic schools and colleges through the National Ministries Division of the General Assembly Council.

Operation Christmas Child

Christmas is about sharing the gift of God’s son, Jesus Christ, with the world. Our church is providing you with the unique opportunity to share Christ with a needy child by using a simple shoe box! A child overseas can receive your shoe box, hand delivered, along with Christian literature in his or her own language. The boxes are fun and easy to fill with small toys, school supplies, and other gifts.

Alternative Christmas Fair

Each year in December, we hold an alternative Christmas fair at the church to provide an opportunity for you to purchase Christmas presents in a way that helps artisans in 40 countries around the world. Most of the goods come through SERRV, and organization that provides a way for us to find gifts and crafts from those disadvantaged artisans from around the world. We also provide Presbyterian Coffee and an opportunity to give the gift of an animal through Heifer International.

Habitat for Humanity

We are proud to have created the partnership with the Boston Presbytery in building a townhouse in Roxbury through Habitat for Humanity Boston.
