Disaster Description
Pass Christian is on Mississippi's coast and is one of the communities most devastated by Katrina. The 30-foot storm surge killed 22 people, destroyed nearly all business property, and damaged or destroyed 90 percent of the town's homes. Initially about 25 percent of Pass Christian's 6,500 residents remained.
Like virtually all of its residents, city leaders suffered immense personal loss. City Hall is now in a doublewide trailer. The library is in a small trailer. The storm set back the city 150 years, to its early days as a rustic resort area. But many new houses are springing up and the city is being rebuilt.
MDS Response
MDS purchased property in Pass Christian and set up a long-term project with three mobile homes and a storage shed. Together with the local recovery committee and readily available funds, MDS has completed 24 new builds, 15 major repairs and 42 minor repairs. Over the summer Pass Christian will be visited by youth groups from all over the US and Canada. MDS will continue it's work in Pass Christian this winter.

Our short-term volunteers this week came from the same congregation
in Northwest Ohio. Several of our long termers are from the same congregation. Unit life at times had a church picnic atmosphere.
We were able to construct the rim joist and install floor joists
for two new houses. We installed cabinets and trim for a rehab
and painted the interior of a new house. The new pole building at
our camp received a concrete floor and lights. Three of our rehab
owners were able to sign-off their job cards.
Our unit will be closing down for the holidays on December 18. Most
of our long termers will leave for home on Saturday with Ralph and
Carolyn leaving on Monday. Our construction foreman, Alva and wife
Joyce, will be moving on to the MDS Hackberry location for a month
after the holidays. Lori will be relocating to MDS Mobile and Catrina
returns to school at Calvin College .

6,500 residents remained. The rest are scattered nationwide, joining 2
million other hurricane displaced peoples across America.
Pass Christian's government is in tatters. Like virtually all of its residents, city leaders suffered immense personal loss. City Hall is
now in a doublewide trailer. The library is in a small trailer. The
storm set back the city 150 years, to its early days as a rustic
resort area. Little of the tax base remains, nor does any meaningful employment beyond contract work for cleanup and debris removal.

Report to December 16, 2006
Per their website:
12/06:
Pass Christian is on Mississippi's coast and is one of the communities most devastated by Katrina. The 30-foot storm surge killed 22 people, destroyed nearly all business property, and damaged or destroyed 90 percent of the town's homes. Only about 25 percent of Pass Christian's 6,500 residents remained. The rest are scattered nationwide, joining 2 million other hurricane displaced peoples across America.
Pass Christian's government is in tatters. Like virtually all of its residents, city leaders suffered immense personal loss. City Hall is now in a doublewide trailer. The library is in a small trailer. The storm set back the city 150 years, to its early days as a rustic resort area. Little of the tax base remains, nor does any meaningful employment beyond contract work for cleanup and debris removal.
Our short-term volunteers this week came from the same congregation in Northwest Ohio. Several of our long termers are from the same congregation. Unit life at times had a church picnic atmosphere. We were able to construct the rim joist and install floor joists for two new houses. We installed cabinets and trim for a rehab and painted the interior of a new house. The new pole building at our camp received a concrete floor and lights. Three of our rehab owners were able to sign-off their job cards.
Our unit will be closing down for the holidays on December 18. Most of our long termers will leave for home on Saturday with Ralph and Carolyn leaving on Monday. Our construction foreman, Alva and wife Joyce, will be moving on to the MDS Hackberry location for a month after the holidays. Lori will be relocating to MDS Mobile and Catrina returns to school at Calvin College .
