Mission: Fighting Hunger and touching lives, Island Harvest — Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization — serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it. Our volunteers and staff “rescue,” or collect, good surplus food from over 800 local restaurants, caterers, farms, and other food-related businesses; and distribute it to a network of close to 570 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other places where those in need can access it. We also conduct educational programs to increase hunger awareness and inform the public how they can get involved in our mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.
Areas Served: New York

Hurricane Sandy Update 11/8/12
ISLAND HARVEST REACHES THOUSANDS OF LONG ISLANDERS IN LARGEST LOCAL HUNGER RELIEF EFFORT TO DATE
(LONG ISLAND, NY) Operating in emergency response mode since Hurricane Sandy hit, hundreds of Island Harvest volunteers and staff have been working around the clock to assist hurricane-stricken Long Islanders. In coordination with government officials, first responders, and local relief agencies, Island Harvest has been distributing tens of thousands of sandwiches, water, and nonperishable food items, including cereal, peanut butter, and shelf stable canned goods throughout the region.
Island Harvest’s mobile food pantries have been visiting some of the hardest hit communities devastated by the super storm bringing food and personal care items to thousands of residents in need. For several days, volunteers and staff have been on the road; walking the streets; and going door to door, delivering much needed food and supplies.
“During our visits to the hurricane-stricken areas, we’ve received an outpouring of gratitude,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “Many residents expressed their thankfulness to receive fresh food and cold water. So many victims of the hurricane remain positive and their resilience is remarkable.”
On the day of the Nor’easter, Island Harvest distributed 117,100 pounds of food — more than 97,500 meals — and water to hard-hit neighborhoods, including Coram, Center Moriches, Hauppauge, Huntington, Long Beach, Oceanside, Roosevelt, Wantagh, Mastic, Shirley, Amityville, Baldwin Harbor, Island Park, and Far Rockaway.
Back at Island Harvest’s warehouses in Hauppauge and Uniondale, a number of relief agencies continuously drop off food to help in the effort. These sites have also been locations for individuals in need to make pick-ups from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Hauppauge Distribution Site is located at 40 Marcus Boulevard; the Uniondale site is at 875 Jerusalem Avenue behind the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care facility. Also, Island Harvest is working with local companies, such as Modell’s to set up in-store food drop offs.
Island Harvest has implemented its “Text to Donate” system. Those interested in providing support can type HUNGER RELIEF to 266266 to make a financial donation. To donate online or to find out about volunteer opportunities, visit www.islandharvest.org or call (516) 294-8528 or (631) 873-4775.
