Mission: Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is a partnership of community members who promote public waterfront access through conservation, education and recreation. To ensure the long-term vitality and health of the Rockaway waterfront we work with the local community, and specifically youth, to raise their environmental consciousness, establish a sense of ownership of the public waterfront, and create opportunities for them to play a role in the determination of their neighborhoods.
Our philosophy is that the public waterfront is for all people to enjoy. We believe people from all ethnic backgrounds deserve the same right to use, access and enjoy their waterfront.
Rockaway Waterfront Alliance believes the local community has a unique opportunity to make positive change in their communities. Partnering with local residents and youth in our efforts to revitalize and protect the waterfront will have a long lasting effect on the waterfront and the Far Rockaway community.
We hope that through our programs and community outreach the Rockaway community will be empowered to establish community-led initiatives that will create a diverse, vibrant, healthy and active waterfront; created by the community for the community.

Notes:
FROM THE SITE 11/21/12:
In light of the the recent devastation from Storm Sandy, RWA has been working to help the local community with disaster relief efforts in the Rockaways.
RWA was one of the first to respond on the ground; serving homebound residents with hot meals, emergency food and clothing from Firehouse 59. Volunteers have been helping to deliver care packages of emergency supplies door-to- door to homes all along the peninsula and in public housing projects hit hardest by the storm.
As things have gone from emergency relief to recovery efforts, RWA has been helping in the most devastated areas of the Rockaway Peninsula. Deploying volunteers to assist with large scale clean ups; clearing streets of washed out cars, mountains of sand and debris and assisting businesses and home owners in digging out their own properties.
RWA has been working closely with other grassroots organizations and government agencies to distribute information on the ground to community members in need of government relief or services. We intend to continue these efforts as we work to establish more long term plans to get the Rockaway community back on it’s feet and rebuild the Rockaways as a more environmentally resilient community.
Rockaway Waterfront Alliance(RWA) has been leading the way in the revitalization of the Rockaway Waterfront, to strengthen the connection between the community and the waterfront. We are a community-based non-profit organization that works to empower the local Rockaway community to play a role in the determination of their neighborhoods, and foster an understanding of the principals of environmental justice and urban sustainability.
