Samaritan's Purse is responding to Hurricane Sandy by sending staff, equipment, and volunteers to some of the hardest hit areas.
Three Disaster Relief Units deployed from our North Carolina headquarters Tuesday morning. We are registering volunteers now so we will be ready to help storm victims as soon as we establish bases of operation.
"These people are just devastated and need help," Samaritan's Purse President Franklin Graham said.
Five program managers left North Carolina on Monday, bound for areas devastated by the storm. Once needs have been assessed, our Disaster Relief Units will travel to the areas that most need help. Two other units in the U.S. and one unit in New Brunswick, Canada, are on standby are ready to roll if needed.
"We’ve already identified four different areas we want to go in," Graham said. "We’ve dispatched three trucks. We’ve got two we’re holding back in reserve to see if there is a greater need that comes to our attention in the next couple days, and then we’d dispatch those trucks. We have hundreds of volunteers that are ready to come."
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Samaritan's Purse is asking for volunteers as we respond to Hurricane Sandy.
PREPARING FOR THE STORM: Samaritan’s Purse disaster relief teams have been working for days to ready our response to Hurricane Sandy.
Hurricane Sandy made landfall in southern New Jersey Monday night as a deadly “superstorm,” bringing 90-mph winds and a roiling wall of seawater as it moved inland and causing widespread flooding in the New York metropolitan area. It was 900 miles wide as it approached, with hurricane-force winds extending 175 miles from the epicenter and tropical-force winds extending 520 miles, potentially making it one of the biggest storms to ever hit the East Coast.
At least 55 people were killed, many by falling trees. More than six million people are without power, and roads and subways have been closed in much of the region.
The hurricane collided with a winter storm and a cold front, making it a devastating hybrid that could afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow.
"Our prayers are with the families that are the victims of this great storm, and especially our condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones," Graham said. "I want those who are still in the middle of this storm to know that a lot of people are praying."
Samaritan's Purse responds to major storms throughout the United States by deploying Disaster Relief Units, tractor-trailers stocked with tools and equipment, from our North Carolina headquarters. Our volunteers help homeowners by tarping wind-damaged roofs, removing unsalvageable belongings and cleaning out debris and muck from flooded homes, ripping up ruined flooring and stripping damaged sheetrock from walls, and spraying the exposed studs with a solution that kills mold. The works saves homeowners thousands of dollars and gives them a chance to rebuild.
We make it clear that we work in the Name of Jesus by praying with the people we’ve helped and presenting them with a Bible signed by the volunteers who worked on their home.
Samaritan's Purse responded when Hurricane Irene lashed the East Coast last year, deploying teams to help hundreds of homeowners in North Carolina, New Jersey, and Vermont. -> Thurs. 11/1/12 - Hurricane Sandy NJ Operations Update:
