mission: -> NECHAMA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides disaster response and training services nationwide. Since 1996, we have trained and mobilized thousands of volunteers to help communities clean up after floods, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. Our dedicated staff and headquarters are based in the Twin Cities and many of our volunteers are distributed outside of Minnesota and across the US.

Hurricane Isaac’s wind and floodwater battered communities in Mississippi and Louisiana over the course of multiple days. NECHAMA is on the scene helping people restore their homes. In some neighborhoods water is still receding and roads are just becoming accessible. We are officially announcing the acceptance of volunteers and donations to support our important and time-sensitive work. nitially we are focused on assisting Jackson County and other hurricane-affected communities in southern Mississippi with flood cleanup, clearing damaged trees, and temporary roof repairs. These volunteer services offered by NECHAMA will support ongoing recovery efforts across Southern Mississippi. NECHAMA continues to be in regular contact with our voluntary organization partners working in Louisiana and anticipates assisting communities there as well. We are planning on working in Mississippi and Louisiana until Sept. 14, 2012. We have established a base of operations in Biloxi, MS, a coastal community with a history of welcoming volunteers from across the country. If in the coming weeks there are still pressing needs to be addressed and if we are able to raise funds to stay longer, we will consider extending our deployment. Fortunately Hurricane Isaac was no Katrina but for the hundreds of families that are displaced and have suffered damage to their homes as a result of Isaac’s force, NECHAMA’s comfort and aid is critical. VOLUNTEER DETAILS: http://nechama.org/index.php/project-isaac WORK SITES: NECHAMA staff and team leaders will organize structured work and provide tools and site leadership Sunday – Friday. Saturdays off. We will be engaged in flood cleanup, tree removal and temporary roof repair tasks. Please bring clothing that you can dispose of if necessary and closed toed shoes. Boots with puncture resistant soles are recommended. Please bring heavy duty work gloves. Remember that the late summer weather of Bayou of the Gulf Coast is no Mid-West and that temperatures and humidity are in the high 80's and 90's. Pack accordingly with moisture-wicking or light weight material like nylon. MEALS: We will provide basic cold breakfast and bag lunch options each day. Dinner ingredients will be sourced locally and volunteers can take turns preparing dinner each night. (Volunteers, please consider donating to help us offset the costs of providing meals) TRANSPORTATION: Nearest Airport: Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) Nearest Bus Stations: Biloxi Greyhound Station 820 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd Biloxi, MS 39530 Gulfport Greyhound Station 2805 13th St Gulfport, MS 39501 Volunteers are responsible for arranging and providing their own transportation to and from the deployment base of operations. Once on site at our base we have a limited number of seats available in NECHAMA vehicles to shuttle volunteers to and from the local work sites.
