Mission: In the aftermath of the April 27, 2011, storms, the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham established the Alabama Tornado Recovery Fund to accept gifts that will in turn be used throughout our state in the regions impacted by the April 27 tornadoes. In the first week, more than $250,000 had been raised, including a lead gift of $100,000 from Medical Properties Trust. As of May 31, the fund had received 25 gifts totaling more than $309,000.

"Ten community foundations serving our state will work together to effectively deploy these additional resources that will be needed for long-term recovery," said Community Foundation president Kate Nielsen. "The choice to house the Alabama Tornado Recovery Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham follows a model used by community foundations in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina."

Donors should specify the Alabama Tornado Recovery Fund if they wish to benefit statewide efforts or Emergency Response Fund for gifts that will benefit recovery within the Greater Birmingham area (Jefferson, Blount, Walker and St. Clair counties). Both funds are listed among options for your on-line gifts or you can send a check to 2100 First Avenue North, Suite 700, Birmingham 35203, attention Tornado Recovery. Please specify whether you wish your check to benefit local or statewide efforts.

Direct gifts of time and money also can benefit agencies that serve as first responders, including Red Cross Mid Alabama Region, Salvation Army, United Way of Central Alabama and Hands On Birmingham

Local community foundations also will accept gifts to serve their areas exclusively. In addition to Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, the community foundation serving affected areas are:
