Mission: Martin Luther King, Jr., often noted that churches are the most segregated institutions in America. A church in Birmingham is changing all that. Beloved Community Church gathers people from all walks of life, bridging the divides of race, sexual orientation, economic situations and even religious background. Recently, we voted to become an open and affirming congregation - letting the gay, bi-sexual, lesbian and transgendered community know they are welcome at Beloved.

Beloved Community's organizing pastor, Rev. Angie Wright, has been involved in social justice efforts in the South for over 20 years. She says, Beloved Community will restore a sense of kinship among all people in a city that continues to be far too divided. Rev. Wright was the founder of Alabama Arise, a citizens group that lobbies on poverty issues. For the many years, she served as program coordinator of BEAT, a very successful community revitalization effort in Ensley. See our "justice" page for more information on Beloved
