MSPCA at Nevins Farm Takes in 12 Dogs and 5 Guinea Pigs from Hard-Hit Springfield Shelters
METHUEN Mass., June 2, 2011,– The MSPCA at Nevins Farm is opening its doors to a number of homeless dogs from shelters in the Springfield area, in an effort to alleviate the strain placed on those facilities after yesterday’s tornadoes. Both the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center and the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society are transferring dogs to the MSPCA, allowing them to address an overflow of stray animals and requests from displaced citizens who need assistance in housing their owned animals.
Six dogs arrived this morning from the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center and are currently being evaluated by MSPCA staff. An additional six dogs are expected to arrive shortly from Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, along with five guinea pigs that are available for immediate adoption. The staff hopes to have some of the dogs available for adoption as soon as this weekend.
“The MSPCA stands ready to assist wherever and whenever needed,” said Mike Keiley, Director of the MSPCA’s Noble Family Animal Care and Adoption Center. “The MSPCA at Nevins Farm is fortunate to have flexible space and a dedicated group of volunteers and staff willing to put in extra effort to support other shelters and our community when a natural disaster affects companion animals. We are always willing to assist our shelter partners whenever there is a need to relocate animals in an emergency.” Keiley added that the MSPCA facility is also designated as an American Red Cross relief partner in instances of natural disasters and emergency response efforts.
In addition to providing support to the affected animal shelters of Springfield, the MSPCA at Nevins Farm’s Equine Ambulances are currently on stand-by to assist with the transport of any equines injured in the tornadoes in the western part of the state. The Equine Ambulance is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through veterinary referral.
Keiley is hopeful that many of the transferred dogs will find homes this weekend, allowing the adoption center the opportunity to take in more animals from affected shelters. For those interested in adoption of these and other animals, visit www.mspca.org/adoption to learn about the adoption process, or call (978)687-7453 ext. 6101.
