(9/03/2012) We sheltered in place running on two generators, and three of us were there 24 hours a day from Tuesday thru Friday night. Friday night our power was restored. All the animals are fine. Twenty dogs were put in foster homes and a few cats to give us the room to keep all animals under the main warehouse roof. Animals remained calm through the storm, as they all saw us every five minutes and we think the 'white noise' of the generators kept them from hearing the roaring winds and rain.

Feeling the effects of the oil spill in our heart
(June 22, 2010)
ARNO is experiencing a huge amount of surrenders... we now have almost as many pets in foster care as we have in the shelter because people cannot afford to keep their pets. Folks are traveling up to us in Jefferson Parish, the outskirts of New Orleans, in the hopes that our no-kill shelter can take their pet. The shelters in Plaquemines Parish and the St. Bernard Parish shelter are beyond full. Our shelter is no different, but if one goes out we have room to give another a spot.
It is hard to resist the begging, the tears, the pleading of those who have been effected by the most recent disaster to hit Louisiana. Whether fisherman, seafood market employee, waitress, oyster shucker, tour boat operator, or one of the many residents whose lives depend on the tourist and fishing industry in the lower end of our state. Many with new mortgages on boats and restaurants, putting them back into business after Katrina destroyed their income. Can they take another hit right at the beginning of a more-than-active-predicted hurricane season? The effect is creeping north to New Orleans’ businesses, with restaurants and hotels cutting back on personnel, large tour groups cancelled, and just what you would expect from ‘sportsman’s paradise’ going to crude oil coated booms. Wildlife, our rare tiny sea turtles and the birds are certainly affected and are some of the most caustic images seen by the public on television.
Pet Retention Program
Official PayPal Seal
This is where we need your help. A program we have in place since late 2006, we call it our Pet Retention Program, needs bolstering big time with your donations. This program allows individuals or families who are of low income or currently out of work to retain their pets with ARNO footing the bill for the pet. We provide whatever the pet needs, i.e. food, medical care (maintenance and extraordinary), transportation to and from the vet, dog houses, and even a carrier to make sure they have provisions to evacuate with the pet. The caseworker assigned to the family stays assigned to that family to assure that care is consistent and to know of social services they might need for the human members of the family. We even have a tri-lingual caseworker, so those who speak only Spanish or French fluently can communicate easily with us. The only thing we request is that if the animal is intact, we insist spay/neuter at our cost.
ARNO has served up to 63 pets at a time, and we need to fund and expand in light of the current needs of the community that surrounds us. [We have even made burial arrangements for one of our indigents and found her pet a new home.] To help more, we need your help.
We know that citizens and nonprofits are suffering right now due to the current economic recession in all parts of our country. Locals practically scoffed at this current recession, because that is all we have known since Katrina. We have all learned how to get by on less… but now we need to step up to the needs of these animals if we are able. ARNO cannot help but to respond as best as we are able to these animals who through no fault of their own, again, are victims of a disaster.
Give a gift to this program and sponsor a family’s pet for $25 a month. We will send you details of what your donation supplied and about the family you are helping. You can specify that your gift is recurring for ‘x’ amount of months on the PayPal link, and in the note field put “Pet Retention Program” so we will know you want to help those less fortunate with their pets.
Thank you so much for supporting ARNO and these families, and God save Louisiana!

Cats always outnumber the dogs, and the feline species has proven the better survivor having an innate ability to attune their metabolic rate with what the environment has to offer in the way of food and drink. Make no mistake, nature takes a cruel toll as only the strongest will survive unless rescued.
The streets of the greater New Orleans area are no place for kids to play, or kittens to romp… but the dogs seem like the victims that suffer intolerably before either succumbing to illnesses as simple as parasites or being gratefully rescued. Rescue work immediately after Katrina was frequently difficult mostly due to the terrain to be traversed… newly created inky waterways blocked by downed cables, gnarled electrical lines, massive tree branches, and the invisible graves of drowned autos just a few feet below the surface. Today rescue is ‘easier’ in the respect that the land is dry, but the animals have mastered much in almost two years in the wild. No longer is it a simple matter of trapping, but tracking must be initially incorporated to find their nests and discover their habits. Nighttime is not a period to sleep, but to come out and play, chase and consume rats or whatever other prey might exist as a fresh meat morsel.
The streets in the neighborhood these dogs call home are notably deserted these days. There are very few residents who have come back, fewer rebuilding, and scores of deserted light industrial businesses…it is not an affluent section of town and will be one of the last sections of the city to ‘come back.’ ->

There are very few residents who have come back, fewer rebuilding, and scores of deserted light industrial businesses…it is not an affluent section of town and will be one of the last sections of the city to ‘come back.’ -> Dead in the Water…

Yes, They Still Need Us…
There is so much said about how many are still left on the street…is it five, ten, twenty or forty thousand animals? Cats always outnumber the dogs, and the feline species has proven the better survivor having an innate ability to attune their metabolic rate with what the environment has to offer in the way of food and drink. Make no mistake, nature takes a cruel toll as only the strongest will survive unless rescued.

Duties include 'dishes' (litter pans and food/water bowl

Donations and volunteers are always needed to continue this
invaluable work. ARNO receives no major funding, existing entirely

Help us rescue them one by one until there are none left homeless,

SPCA of Texas in Dallas, McKinney help animals fleeing Hurricane Gustav

By CAITLIN MYERS / The Dallas Morning News SPCA of Texas shelters in Dallas and McKinney are no longer accepting owner-surrendered pets to make room for animals fleeing the threat of Hurricane Gustav. Link: Louisiana SPCA shelter animals evacuate
The Louisiana SPCA is evacuating animals and working with shelters in Texas, said Maura Davies, a SPCA of Texas spokeswoman. The Dallas and McKinney shelters began restricting their intake Wednesday. The Dallas SPCA can provide shelter for about 250 animals and the McKinney location can house about 500 animals and has the ability to expand if necessary, Ms. Davies said. It sits on 20 acres and features an indoor facility, temporary kennels, a climate-controlled barn and two pastures. Texas residents looking to drop off animals are encouraged to find alternative shelters online

Please crosspost to those who could help...in NOLA, Metairie,
Harahan area (open 10am-9pm) ARNO's main kennel guru, Jackie
Quick, is down with his back totally out. Robin needs assistance
from any able-bodies to walk dogs, feed and water dogs, and help
clean out kennels and runs.
Have any friends with teenagers strong enough to help? Or just
enjoy walking dogs and showing them love? Want to smell puppy
breath (after you clean their cage)?
Please, we need you to come and help at our no-kill shelter at
271 Plauche St., New Orleans 70123; (off Edwards Avenue behind
Elmwood area on S. Clearview Pkwy.) Text message to 504.913.2328
email: table25@bellsouth.net

We need volunteers who can help us at the shelter. We are very
short of help and need people who can help us with animal care.
Duties include 'dishes' (litter pans and food/water bowl
scrubbing), laundry, cat cages cleaned, puppy pens cleaned, dogs
walked... but mostly we need help with dishes and the cats...
Donations and volunteers are always needed to continue this
invaluable work. ARNO receives no major funding, existing entirely
on your donations. Please consider helping in any way you can.
Help us rescue them one by one until there are none left homeless,
hungry and unloved on the streets of New Orleans and surrounding
areas.
Please post to your friends and associates who care about
animals. ARNO's success has always been, and continues to be,
dependent upon volunteers. We need more local volunteers to
keep the operation running. ARNO has been blessed with a
successful outreach for out-of-state volunteers but there
are times when we must call upon our local folks. I know
locals are all busy with your own rescues, rebuilding your
homes, your businesses, and trying to get back to financial
stability. But please consider coming to help us at the
shelter... even one day a week for a few hours.
If you know high school students who love animals, this is a
perfect opportunity to put in community service hours, and a
wonderful opportunity to add a bright spot to rescued animals
lives.
The shelter is located at 271 Plauche St., Harahan, LA 70123; in the
Elmwood Business Park area off Edwards Ave. Robin,. You don't have
to make an appointment to help... Come to our triage shelter. We
welcome everyone who wants to help! You can let us know when you
can come by signing up online at http://animalrescueneworleans.org/volunteer.html
and even tell us what duties you prefer.
