notes: FROM THE SITE: TO VOLUNTEER… In response to our community’s urgent need during this crisis, many people from within our own church body as well as from all around the country are asking: What can I do? Whether you are one of the CHCC church body or a member of the community or from out-of-state, you are encouraged to serve alongside us with the distribution or construction efforts. College Heights Christian Church is responding in two major areas: (1) running a major Distribution Center and warehouse, and (2) organizing a Volunteer Marketplace where we connect the individuals who were affected by the storm with skill laborers who are volunteering their time and effort, as we begin the “rebuilding” efforts. ================================ Distribution Center We are a running a major distribution center in Joplin for those hit by the storm. It runs from 9 AM-7 PM, seven days per week. The work involves receiving, sorting, and distributing non-perishable food, paper goods, and toiletries. We will not be distributing clothing. Jobs range from light to heavy work and may include everything from carrying boxes, sorting items, serving as a personal shopping assistant, fixing food for volunteers, etc. In order to get help where it is truly needed, we are asking you to register with us so that we can plan for the numbers needed, avoid as much chaos as possible, and make this a well-oiled machine. We do request that you carefully consider when you are able to contribute your time and then honor your commitment. After registering online, all volunteers can simply show up at the appropriate time at our facility (4311 East Newman Road, Joplin). Parking lot attendants will direct you to the appropriate areas to park and enter the building. You will be asked to register on-site before being assigned a task. For simplicity, we have broken the day into two shifts. However, the specific times are flexible. There is no problem if you need to come an hour late or leave an hour early; just sign up with the understanding these represent approximate times. And feel free to sign up for both shifts to cover a whole day if you are so inclined. We welcome you to sign up for multiple days/shifts, but ask you to carefully consider what is appropriate for you. We care very much about your well-being! Volunteers with trade skills who wish to help a family in need will list their skills and possible windows of availability and contact information. Storm victims in need will work with the church and be directed to these volunteers personally to request this help. An application and waiver will be required to help us better facilitate the needs and organizing them between the various churches and organizations who desire to serve. In doing this, CHCC is creating this online Volunteer Marketplace, creating the opportunity for a connection to take place.
