Operation Helping Hands brings volunteers from across the country together to help elderly, disabled, or uninsured victims of Hurricane Katrina. Operation Helping Hands is a volunteer program of Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans to assist the community in reoccupying their homes.
Operation Helping Hands mobilizes a large volunteer corps supported by the leadership of Catholic Charities and church parishes within the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
The volunteer corps is organized in groups ranging from 10 to 15 people. Groups come with their own designated leaders to volunteer for long weekends or a week in the Greater New Orleans area. Volunteers will come from outside
the Archdiocese and will involve members of the local and surrounding communities.
To support this effort, Catholic Charities staff team is working in close cooperation with church parish teams who will also recruit volunteers, provide accommodations, and hospitality, and supervise the work.
As the number of homes in the area inneed of gutting dwindles, we are now recruiting** semi-skilled, longer term volunteers to help us paint, landscape and rebuild the homes that we have gutted.
These volunteers will ideally have experience with one or more of the following:
• Drywall • Painting • Installing insulation • Carpentry • Electricity
• Plumbing • Flooring
Operation Helping Hands has in the past accomodated anywhere from 75-200 volunteers at any one time, but can comfortable accomodate up to 100.
