Since 2006 the Community Center of St Bernard has been here to help St Bernard families get the assistance they need, whether it's food, clothes, medical care, legal aid, counseling, or other services. Today the residents of St Bernard Parish, who have already survived Hurricane Katrina, are facing another disaster as the Gulf Oil Spill spreads, moving ever closer to their coastline. The oil spill is threatening the fish and seafood that many St Bernard families depend on to earn their living. A commercial and recreational fishing ban is currently in effect, and fishermen are signing up for our food pantry so that they will be able to feed their families until they can find other work. The Community Center is here, ready to help them in any way we can. But we can't do it alone. Please donate now so that we can continue to provide essential services like food and clothes to families in need.
With government estimates showing that more than 800,000 gallons of crude oil are now spilling out every day, the situation is becoming increasingly desperate. The federal fishing bans now cover one-third of the Gulf Coast, and commercial fishermen and other St Bernard residents who depend on the commercial and recreational fishing industries are signing up for the Community Center's food pantry so that they will be able to feed their families until they can find other work. The demand for basic services like food, clothes, and information are all up by more than 20% for the past month, with more families needing help every day.
Spoke to Iray, they will be back to full operation Mon. 9/8 and are ramping up to distribute to the St. Bernard Parish community with the expecationt that the many evacuees returning will have a need to replace spoiled food and be financially challenged as a result of evacuation.
Americorps is delivering water, but he's going to assess if other hot spots need it more than they do before accepting it.
He's put in a request through the state for volunteers to assist next week with food distribution.
He asks that once Gustav efforts settle down to conference to update his facility entry in the database.

Just got off the phone with Iray at the Community Ctr. of St. Bernard. He's evac'ing to Vicksburg, MS because his boss has a reservation at a hotel he'll share but he's not recommending folks evac to MS. Based on my assessment, what the state is recommending and just logical sense people need to get to NORTHEAST LA (anything East of Picayune). The mood in St. Bernards is pretty much sheer panic as the residents do not feel they are being given clear direction on where they can go. To this point I've not gotten that kind of feedback but that means nothing because I've not really had the time to call to many folks to get an assessment. I've been going based on news reports and the media can tend to make things rosy. There are still 1600 families in FEMA trailers and they really don't want to take a bus and risk losing the most valueable and essential thing they own, a car. There just hasn't been much concrete info out there on where the best place they can go and not spend money they don't have for hotels (there are none left at this point anyway). The word is St. Bernard will put out a mandatory evac order Sat. 8/30. I've pretty much got a near if not complete list of the big shelters that are state run that are accepting bus evac's and self evac's. The city of NOLA has the capacity to get 35,000 folks out but as of last night only 8,000 had signed up. The thing people are really asking for and needing is list of smaller shelters 3-4 hours out like churches and YMCA's and such. These folks can't afford the gas to go 5 hours out (which in real time is likely 10-15 hours by tomorrow - sat.). I suppose if shelter sites were off the beaten path a longer trip would be okay because they'd avoid the highway landlock. How have I even found any shelters at all? Not by looking at any government sites or EMA's. I haven't tried county sites yet (why not? I don't know it's worked well in the past - I'm trying to do TOO much). So far the media is the only way I've been able to extract needles in the haystack. Iray and I are of the same mind. They are being rightfully prudent and als covering their asses. This government can't afford any more criticism. We'll see how that plays out. I am in fact impressed with the preparedness and the supplies/logistics already in place that I've heard...proof will be in the response. Ask me again on Tues. or Wed. of next week. I'm working on a HARDCOPY list of LA shelters and hope to have it done by tonight. ANYTHING y'all can do to assist in getting more shelters in the database will be of tremendous help to me. Unfortunately, I can't hand you a list like I should be able to. You'll have to hunt and peck just like I've been for the last 48 hours. I'm going on very little sleep so I'll be down for about 2 hours, starting now. Thanks for anything you can do to help,Les

Iray called 7/08 and asked us to update the dbase record to better reflect their website. I made a few changes, nothing huge. Avails/needs still need some touch up. I put their needs list from the website into the notes here temporarily, til the needs list is fixed here in the dbase. -> 9/23: TF: I just got off the phone with someone. The cell listed above. I am shipping out a load of books/computers tomorrow and wanted to give someone else a chance besides HOPE Missions, who has gotten a ton of stuff from us. So I called these guys. It was 8:30 his time. He said, "is this some kind of emergency? it's after hours". I was polite and apologized and said that it wasn't an emergency, even though he was pretty snarky. I'm in no mood to send anyone or anything there, til someone tells me that this group is the best there is and that I'm mistaken to think they are being snarky for no real good reason.

The Community Center of St. Bernard Parish is a grassroots,
nonprofit organization that is committed to creating a vital
community space for residents and volunteers who are working
together to rebuild the Parish, post-Katrina.
Socialization is key to the rebuilding of St. Bernard Parish.
Isolation is one of the most damaging effects of Katrina.
Residents need a place to come together daily, to share a
meal as well as their unbelievably surreal stories with others
who understand. It's natural and human to eat together, especially
in New Orleans where food is so much a part of the culture.
Residents need free phones and the internet to rebuild their
businesses.
They need a respectful place to feel comfortable taking donated
supplies that arrive for them from all over the world. And they
need to feel that they're contributing to the recovery process,
too. No matter how hard they hurt inside.
The Community Center of St. Bernard will offer a non-political,
non-denominational, safe and inclusive space to assist residents
in their return home, where they can gather to reconnect as they
rebuild their lives, businesses and neighborhoods.

Thanks for anything you can do to help,Les

who understand. It?s natural and human to eat together ? especially
in New Orleans where food is so much a part of the culture.
Residents need free phones and the internet to rebuild their
businesses.
They need a respectful place to feel comfortable taking donated
supplies that arrive for them from all over the world. And they
need to feel that they?re contributing to the recovery process,
too. No matter how hard they hurt inside.
The Community Center of St. Bernard will offer a non-political,
non-denominational, safe and inclusive space to assist residents
in their return home, where they can gather to reconnect as they
rebuild their lives, businesses and neighborhoods.

mission: -> As they undertake one of the most daunting disaster recovery efforts this nation has ever seen, the people of St. Bernard have very practical needs. They need laundry facilities so they can keep themselves and their children clean. They need phones so they can maintain contact with family members scattered across the country. They need internet connections so they can find information about rebuilding their businesses and their homes. They need a centralized location for services so they can receive donated supplies and assistance easily and with dignity. And they need a place to come together to enjoy a hot, nutritious meal and share their ongoing frustrations and successes with their neighbors. The Community Center of St Bernard is dedicated to providing hurricane survivors with the recovery resources they need in a safe and all-inclusive setting.
