"NICCO:medical assistance (including psychological care), toiletries distribution, portable toilet set-up Natori and Iwanuma city, Miyagi Pref. and site investigation in Rikuzentakata city, Iwate Pref."
On 16th March, we visited local community halls of Natori city and Iwanuma city once again to organize our mobile clinic service.
We started the service on 17th March, in cooperation with Tohoku International Clinic, as well as the Fukuoka-based NGO, Rocinantes. Fukuoka is in the north of Japan's south island Kyushu, and Rocinantes has experience delivering medical assistance to north and east Sudan.
On the first day, the clinic travelled to Tatekoshi Elementary School in Natori city, where 600 people are taking shelter.
There are many people who had lost their medicine due to the tsunami, and they were feeling anxious. Some of the people we helped said that they felt relieved just to receive their necessary medicines.
In the shelter, there are many people who have high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic health problems, so it is important to organize a network to maintain a stable supply of medicines to those who need them.
Furthermore, symptoms such as flu and fever caused by prolonged periods of living as evacuees, as well as psychological disorders such as flashbacks and panic attacks were seen.
Since the acute phase of emergency relief has past, now it is time to start psycho-social care (treating the emotional needs of those who have suffered trauma) for the victims of the disaster. We have already met five people who need psycho-social care.
In the past, Dr. Kuwayama from Frontline and NICCO have implemented psycho-social care programs in Java, Sumatra and Pakistan as a part of relief activities following disasters, as well as for Iraqi refugees. We will now apply our experience here in Japan.
In Natori and Iwanuma, necessary supplies were provided as early as five days after the disaster. Therefore, we have decided to provide supplies to more isolated regions, and on 17th March, we dispatched our research team to Rikuzen-Takada city of Iwate prefecture (about 480 km/300 miles from Natori/Iwanuma).
According to the report from the team, local governmental buildings were destroyed - in line with television broadcasts - and the local government has been paralyzed. Therefore, the area's 65 shelters are being organized by the local community.
Thanks to media reports, supplies such as food and clothes have already been received, but it is far from enough.
Many companies have donated supplies to Japan Platform, and we will strive to transport these to Rikuzen-Takada.
From 13th of March, NICCO has started to support the victims who have been affected by devastating earthquake in Japan. The period of this relief activity is to be around three month.
The activity contains medical support and coordination of volunteers for building further network to implement affective aids.
You can make a donation from NICCO's website for the earthquake in Japan.
We sincerely hope that the victims will soon recover, and pray for them.

mission:
Founded in Kyoto, NICCO is a non-governmental organization with a history of about 30 years.
In these past three decades NICCO has conducted urgent disaster assistance, self-reliance support, rural environment protection and human resource development.
Currently, NICCO operates its missions in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Japan.
In Japan, NICCO manages a model farm for environmental conservation agriculture and offers internships for human resource development
History of NICCO
NICCO was founded as Kampuchean Refugee Relief Program (KRRP) in December 15, 1979. The first activity of KRRP was a fund raising campaign for Cambodian refugees. Students and housewives responded to the call and collected donations at the streets of Kyoto.
Members of KRRP, however, keenly sensed that giving money and goods would not ensure the refugees' life security for the future, so they began a "self-reliance support" by trial and error.
As Cambodians in refugee camps were not permitted to have jobs or return home, they needed some sources of income to support their livelihood in a humane manner. Therefore, KRRP provided "Livestock/Fowl Bank" and "Fabric Bank" to loan piglets, mulberry seedling for silk worms and others.
Farmers, then, could reimburse borrowed capital until a loan limit. KRRP enabled refugees self-reliance as a community and income improvement by implementing that idea together with a committee which was organized by community habitants.
In 1993, KRRP changed its name into Nippon International Cooperation for Community development(NICCO). The needs of people may change depending on the period, state, region and others. However, the fundamental goal of NICCO is freeing people from poverty and conflict and helping people realize their potential for harmony with the global environment.
Hence, NICCO is developing its activities based on humanitarianism without distinction of race, religion, and politics.
NICCO's Missions

Our Vision
NICCO aspires to create a world free of poverty and conflicts where people are able to realize their potential to the fullest while sustaining harmony with the global environment.
