Mission: World Cares Center works within communities to train and support citizens and local leaders to emerge as disaster managers providing local response. In a catastrophic event everyone is called upon to help, official responders and NGO’s cannot reach everyone. Local leaders are the first responders despite their lack of training and they will need guidance, training and resources. WCC provides the training and the connectivity to resources.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shelter Volunteers needed in New Brunswick, New Jersey to fill shifts NOW!!
World Cares Center Assists NYC and NJ in Hurricane Sandy Response

NEW YORK-NEW JERSEY (October 29, 2012) - As hurricane Sandy bears down on the Tri-State region, World Cares Center (WCC) is coordinating unaffiliated volunteers and volunteer groups who wish to help. Unaffiliated volunteers are those who wish to help but are not part of a pre-established group ahead of time. Currently there is an urgent need for volunteers to assist Shelter Operations in New Brunswick NJ for morning shifts.

World Cares Center provides two online briefings daily, "Disaster Volunteering" and "Disaster Management for Grassroots Leaders" Both events can be accessed through the WCC website at: www.worldcares.org<http://www.worldcares.org>.

In addition, online applications, information on volunteering can be found at www.worldcares.org<http://www.worldcares.org>.

Organizations needing volunteers can access request through the "get involved" section of the website.

World Cares Center, formed in the aftermath of September 11, 2001 is a critical organization for the emergency response community, providing training programs for community leaders to organize volunteers in times of crisis. WCC also trains grassroots organizations and individual citizens with specialized emergency preparedness programs for seniors and youth. WCC's training and volunteer coordination efforts and cleanup were instrumental to the recovery from Hurricane Irene.

Hurricane Sandy update - Newsletter dated 10/26/12 (LT):

Dear Friend and World Cares Center Supporter,

I am writing to you with a sense of urgency as Hurricane Sandy is on its way. In 2011-2012 World Cares Center was called upon to coordinate volunteers and volunteer groups across the state of New Jersey to muck out survivors homes and help them reclaim their lives from Hurricane Irene. There were not enough groups to help so our teams trained local groups and led them into the field. All total, together we helped 1220 of the neediest residents and reclaimed over 600 homes. The work continues still.

The irony is that WCC received no funds to do this work and we will be hard pressed to help again without funding. We have a small, highly effective and passionate team that is an integral part of the relief effort and they need your support.

I am calling on our long time partners who know who we are and what we do. Our partners who know that more than 85% of the money we raise goes to our programs. Our supporters get pictures and reports from the field telling them where their dollars are being put to good use. If you or your company will be donating to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy I implore you to consider donating even a small portion of those dollars to World Cares Center.

Thank you for you kind consideration and continued support.

NEWSLETTER DATED 8/29/11:

We hope that you and your family are safe and that your homes have weathered the storm. Over the past few days, Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene ripped across the eastern United States from North Carolina to Vermont, including New York City and the Tri-State Area. As these events unfolded, we at World Cares Center witnessed the tremendous human spirit and resilience displayed by residents in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. World Cares Center has played an active role working with its fellow Relief agencies including local, state, and federal emergency management authorities who have activated plans, conducted evacuations when necessary, and sheltered tens of thousands of people and trained volunteers to help. The collaboration, coordination, and resiliency act as an inspiration and we extend our sincere thanks all of those who are helping.

World Cares Center's "just in time" training has been offered throughout the weekend to prepared managers to set up reception centers and screen and manage spontaneous volunteer in a safe and effective manner. We have coordinated volunteers to support our partners efforts and will work with NJ211 and the NJ Governor’s office of Volunteerism to match the incoming calls requesting help with organizations that will deploy to provide assistance. This is an important coordinative role that World Cares Center is familiar with from September 11, 2001 to Haiti 2010 and we are honored to be serving in this capacity. We remain active with our New York partners as well.

Although Irene may have passed, much remains to be done. Hundreds of roads are closed in the Tri-State area, thousands of buildings and homes have basements and ground level floors that remain flooded, and inland flooding is expected to be a major ongoing problem for New Jersey in the coming days. As we continue to strive toward promoting a safe and effective recovery alongside volunteers and voluntary organizations, World Cares Center asks that you stay informed and determine what role you have in the recovery effort. If you are interested in organizing a training for your group or being a part of a regional or national training, please contact us at via e-mail at lcampese @ worldcares.org or by calling 212-563-7570 .

Best Regards,
Lisa Orloff and The World Cares Center Team

-------------------------------

World Cares Center empowers communities to work toward their own disaster preparedness and long-term recovery by:

• Collaborating with community-based organizations to provide educational and resilience-building services to communities preparing for and recovering from disasters, emergencies and trauma;
• Working with Homeland Security leadership, emergency managers and relief agencies to effectively integrate and utilize Spontaneous Unaffiliated Community Volunteers (SUCVs) into their disaster response plans;
• Preparing SUCVs to safely and effectively contribute to local emergency response; and
• Supporting long-term recovery and resiliency in communities affected by disaster.

WCC implements its vision of community preparedness and resilience through the work of its Disaster Preparation and Trauma Mitigation (DPTM) program. WCC has provided training and supportive services to more than 40,000 individuals affected by disaster.

The DPTM program provides volunteer management and self-care training for the entire responder community. WCC addresses a gap in training and support by working specifically with SUCVs and the emergency managers who utilize them. Since 2001, WCC has lent its unique perspective to the local, state and national Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) as well as the Human Services Council in efforts to further gain support and understanding of this crucial aspect of disaster response. The actual preparation of individuals who may help in their neighborhoods and the manner in which official agencies look at managing this resource is critical to having the best possible relief effort.
Trainings and workshops have been presented nationwide including efforts in:

• Alexandria, VA
• Baton Rouge, LA
• Bloomington, IL
• Chicago, IL
• Fort Lauderdale, FL
• Harrisburg, PA
• New York, NY
• New Orleans, LA
• Oklahoma City, OK
• Paramus, NJ
• Raleigh, NC
• San Diego, CA
• Washington, DC

Seminars have included:
• Forums for Communities for a Resilient Future (operated jointly with Oklahoma's National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism),
• Leading and Managing Spontaneous Community Volunteers in Response to Terrorism and Disaster (presented to members of NYC-OEM, Chicago OEM, Salvation Army, and American Red Cross)
• Self-Care Modular
• Disaster Volunteering.

In addition, WCC is among the agencies selected by NYC-OEM to staff Volunteer Disaster Centers in the event of an emergency. Major efforts were extended in New Orleans to help support the communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina. International consultation has also been provided to communities in Bermuda and New Zealand.

All of World Cares Center's efforts are underscored by our lessons learned from 9/11, the Gulf Coast hurricanes, and other disasters. The World Cares Center board, advisors and partners (including FEMA, NYC-OEM, American Red Cross, National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism, and members of the New York City Fire and Police Departments) lend expertise and guide program development. Based upon the recommendations of WCC's advisors, DPTM continually improves its approaches to volunteer preparation and management, and responder self-care.

The relationships and lessons learned developed through World Cares Center's September Space program live on through our Disaster Preparation and Trauma Mitigation program.
The September Space experience has been monographed and is now shared through the Leading and Managing III training under the Disaster Preparation and Trauma Mitigation program. The September Space Community resiliency center model has been shared nationally, most recently with the committee developing the "Welcome Home Centers" in New Orleans.
