Massive Earthquake and Tsunami Devastates Japan
At 2:46 p.m. local time on March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 slammed Japan's northeastern coast and triggered a 30-foot tsunami, killing hundreds and washing away buildings, cars and homes in a matter of minutes. Northern coastal cities such as Sendai, Ofutano City and Onahama bore the immediate effects of the quake and tsunami most heavily, though fires have broken out and millions are without electricity in cities as far south as Tokyo. Police have recovered approximately 300 bodies in Sendai so far, and the number of casualties throughout the country is expected to rise dramatically in the coming days.
CAFAmerica works with a number of international emergency response and relief organizations who are providing services and support for the communities impacted by this tragedy. These include the IFRC, Oxfam UK, Doctors Without Borders and Christian Aid. This list will be expanding as more of our organizations turn their focus to providing support.
