CHOLERA -
Christian Aid partner Haiti Survie's work
10 November 2010
Christian Aid partner Haiti Survie has produced posters and booklets to encourage hygienic practices and prevent the spread of cholera.
In August 2010, they produced posters to inspire the local people to work together to rebuild Haiti. Many of these are targeted at local women, who are encouraged to get involved in camp management and other aspects of rebuilding.
Haiti Survie has also been distributing hygiene kits to people living in some of the poorest areas in Port-au-Prince, and promoting good health practices throughout communities

A year on from the quake
It’s been twelve months since an earthquake struck Haiti on 12 January 2010. Christian Aid has been working through partners to respond to the needs of the people most affected by the devastation, helping them rebuild their lives.
Working through local Haitian and Dominican Republic organisations, we have been supporting more than 60,000 people whose lives and livelihoods were shattered.

Supporting rural communities
Hundreds of thousands of people fled Port-au-Prince and the surrounding towns following the quake, seeking refuge with family and friends in the countryside.
While many international aid agencies continue to focus their efforts on the needs of those living in and around the capital city, Christian Aid partners are working with marginalised communities struggling to get by in rural areas.
By providing much needed housing and livelihood opportunities, we are helping families build a new life in the countryside.
Christian Aid partners will be working on our emergency response programme in Haiti until 2014, but our plans for the next six month or so include:
• repairing 150 houses and building 370 permanent, hurricane and quake-resistant houses, training 250 people in construction trades, from masonry to carpentry
• training 1,250 people in agriculture, livestock, fisheries and fruit processing units
• projects to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the environment as well setting up tree nurseries within people’s own community.
