(SAN DIEGO) - Leaders representing government and community organizations outlined plans today for the next phase of the hurricane recovery effort in San Diego County.
"We have successfully worked with a network of community partners to operate the Family Assistance Center to assist evacuees since September 10th," said Ronne Froman, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross in San Diego and Imperial Counties. "To date, we have provided over 2,500 evacuees with shelter, the means to provide food, clothing, transportation and other goods, health care, mental health counseling, advice and referrals. The Red Cross has spent over $700,000 in direct support. We have done so thanks to the generous people, businesses and organizations in San Diego County who donated to the Red Cross," Froman said.
Joining Froman were San Diego Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins; San Diego City Councilmember Tony Young; Chandra Waller, Assistant Director, Dept. of Public Works, County of San Diego; Jimma McWilson, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, Urban League of San Diego; Reverend Eric Miller, Chair, Unmet Needs Committee and Executive Director, Saint Stephens Interdenominational Alliance; Henry Haimsohn, Chair, Board of Directors, 2-1-1 San Diego; Lt. Col. Doug O'Brien, Division Commander, Salvation Army; Debra Stern-Ellis, Director of Community Services, Jewish Family Services; Terry Von Koughnett, Disaster Coordinator, Interfaith Community Services; and Mary Sabillo, Director, Advancement Division, San Diego Workforce Partnership.
Froman said the broad coalition now working together at the Family Assistance Center would now move ahead to provide ongoing support services and recovery information designed to continue the efficient delivery of assistance to families and individuals ravaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita who are now in San Diego County.
The Family Assistance Center location will close at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21. After this location is closed, clients may make appointments to see Red Cross caseworkers by calling 858-309-1200. The Red Cross will work with other local agencies and provide referrals for unmet needs of evacuees. Evacuees can also access the Red Cross and other organizations by calling the Info Line at 2-1-1.
Prior to the center closing, evacuees will be provided comprehensive packets of information and recovery guidelines to help assist them in planning their recovery. This information is available on the Red Cross website at www.sdarc.org under the "Hurricane Katrina" link on the home page. Packets will be dropped off at area hotels and distributed through the participating community organizations.
"The Red Cross has been the bridge from surviving the immediate aftermath of the disaster to the future, providing emergency support," said Froman. "This is the Red Cross's role in any disaster. As evacuees become friends, neighbors and co-workers, they become part of the community. They will access the kind of services that are in place for our community's citizens who need help after an emergency? the same kind of services available for our local disaster victims who lose homes due to fires and other emergencies every day."
