Update on Wharf Jeremie:

Ok, it appears life giving force got a water system placed in the neighborhood with support to sister Marcella. The team from global dirt did their last shift last night, and did some additional training with the nurses to make sure they could handle more intensive cases of cholera. They will be keeping in touch with the sister. I understand that MSF and others are supporting the clinic with supplies, so unless otherwise notified, lets consider the clinic under control. Not sure who is the initial contact with sister marcella, but I would like to get her involved with our medical distribution program and offer her the opportunity to request medical supplies for the clinic. Not sure if she has access to internet...will set up a meeting with her when things slow down a bit here.

Subject: Re: Need

We had a busy night no emergencies but keeping people stable. A noticeable increase in children. We inherited 30-5 patients upon arrival. Acquired 10 more in the Night. And the morning rush gave us 20 with about half in need of evaluation and the other needing immediate iv serum.

We ran out of beds or only ever had one open at time.

Supplies:

Iv or oral doxcy or ciprofloxacin
Massive bucket / aka 10 thousand gallon tank - metal would be ideal because could burn in it. All of their containers are full!

Think that's all for now. We have a great relationship going with the nuns. They seriously want us to stay forever. I would forever recommend working with them.

Subject: Good morning

Brenda,

We had a slower night with around 40 patients. We had our first infant that was critical and dealt with many of the same kids that we treated the day before coming back in a declined state. We are evaluating how we can do better education with discharge to make sure thy are still drinking.

MSF came back with three nurses this morning. An Italian doctor is covering the afternoon and we are taking the night shift.

Supplies:

Butterflies
Heavy duty trash bags
Cleaning gloves for waste disposal workers
24 Gage iv catheters yellow

11/16/10:

PLEASE DO NOT BE CONFUSED BY COMMUNICATIONS INDICATING THAT THIS SITE HAS ALL THE SUPPLIES THEY NEED - MOST DELIVERED ARE SHORT TERM & THEY ARE STILL VERY OVERWHELMED AND NEED LONGER TERM SOLUTIONS & A REGULAR FLOW OF INCOMING SUPPLIES/VOLUNTEERS & SUPPORT. THIS SITE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THIS COMMUNITY AS SISTER IN CHARGE HAS A STRONG ELEMENT OF TRUST DEVELOPED SO THAT THOSE THAT ARE WARY OF TREATMENT WILL COME IN.

UPDATE FROM GRASSROOTS UNITED (PORTIONS PARAPHRASED):

Sending a team out to recon today and establish security for clinic and have 4 to work night shift - assuming they can feel "reasonably" safe.

As per supplies, we have a bit more in stock but not enough to support the clinic for any length of time.

IF MSG IS SUPPORTING THE CLINIC PLEASE HAVE THEM DO A SUPPLY DROP.

I can confidently say they need:

LR solution
22 Gage and smaller iv caths
Tubing
ORS
Chux
Buckets
Bleach
Mops
Gloves- especially size large xl

Additional concern is biohazard mangement. We sent surgical grade cleanser yesterday, but worried about general waste management and handling of fatalities.

Of course, our ultimate goal is to save lives, however, we have a responsibility to the teams to provide as much safety and security as possible - concerned that if they are not well supplied and run out of meds overnight that the situation could turn....

11/14/10 HEAS POST FROM AMY KING/JEFF KERZNER:

"Just spoke with Sister Marciella.....the Wharf Jeremie clinic has received about 80 new cases today 30 of them serious. Totally overwhelmed with no support from the local mayor (who has no resources or expertise to deal with this, though the Ministry of Public Health has said it's his responsibility), Sister said Medecins san Frontiers left the clinic yesterday at 1 PM. I'm
looking into getting them a few pallets of ringer solution and a bunch
of solar powered lights." -Jeff Kerzner PADF

"I'm here now in the near dark waiting for a generator and supplies. Now waiting for Fr Rick. A few are very close to death." -Lisa McFadin

Brenda/GrassRoots United, please message me off-list at rolak...@hotmail.com so we can coordinate supply exchange!

THANK YOU ALL!
