Cholera outbreak threatens Haiti, Church provides clean water systems
27 October 2010

The Church of the Nazarene responded immediately to the outbreak in the Lower Artibonite and North Central Districts by sending 200 doses of antibiotics, hand sanitizer, 30 cases of water, gloves and personal hygiene products.

Dr. Lucien Jean Baptiste, the national leader for the Church of the Nazarene in Haiti, said, “It is important for Nazarene’s everywhere to continue to pray for the people of Haiti during this health crisis.”

Church leaders are also accelerating the already existing clean water campaigns. The church will be giving biosand filters to every Nazarene church and school in Haiti. Biosand filters use slow sand filtration technology to remove bacteria, viruses, and particles from water making it safe for drinking. Church leaders are continuing to meet with the areas’ district superintendents to monitor the situation closely and be prepared for further shipments and intervention as the need arises.

A major earthquake hit Haiti Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Roughly a third of the population of the country has been affected, with extreme shortages in food, water, shelter, fuel, and medical care. Local Nazarenes are working to distribute food, water, tents, and provide medical attention

---

When the January 12, 2010, earthquake struck Haiti, our brothers,
sisters, friends and family were catastrophically affected—and we were
all heartbroken. Within hours and in the days and weeks to come,
Nazarenes responded to the crisis with compassion and generosity.

Churches in Haiti opened their properties to those who had lost homes.
Whatever food and water could be found was shared. A small medical clinic on the Nazarene Seminary campus was turned into a large triage unit.

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM) began working around the clock
to meet basic needs like food, water, shelter, and medical care.
Logistical teams were put into place and distribution centers were
established at the 30-plus Nazarene churches in the Port-au-Prince area. People need help, and Nazarenes are responding.

While meeting these basic needs is still the top priority, we are
already moving forward with plans for the long-term rebuilding of
Haiti — a process that will take years. The goal: to make living
conditions better than before the earthquake.

Churches have been destroyed, homes have collapsed, and schools sit in
ruins. Yet people are continuing to live each day with strength and
hope. Congregations are still meeting to sing God’s praise on the
streets, families are still sleeping and eating together in tents, and
children are starting to gather on church properties for grief and
trauma counseling camps.

We must continue to support our brothers and sisters’ immediate needs
with our hearts focused on the long-term recovery of Haiti. What can you do to make this happen? Donate generously, pray fervently, and volunteer repeatedly.

We hope this website helps you connect more closely to the relief and
recovery in Haiti. Learn how churches continue to respond to the needs
around them. Watch videos of how the earthquake has impacted individuals and families. Find ways to get involved in making a difference in the lives of others
