A CRWRC Rapid Response Team left for North Carolina early this morning to assist with recovery from last week’s massive tornado outbreak in the southern U.S. The Team is based in Sanford, North Carolina, about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh, and is working out of a United Methodist Church there.
“The damage here is incredible,” says Carrie Blauwkamp a regional manager for CRWRC who arrived in the area with her spouse, Len, early this week. “It’s hard to believe that this is just one of ten counties affected by the disaster.”
The Blauwkamps are making early assessments of damage in the Sanford area before traveling to several other counties hard-hit by the twisters. The Rapid Response Team will be in Sanford under the co-leadership of Doug Vander Meulen and Terry Reimink, who will remain there until May 7 to help determine the need for additional teams.
Volunteers are providing support, clean-up, roofing, and chainsaw services for affected residents, in conjunction with local and national disaster organizations.
The storms, which whipped out a record-setting number of tornadoes and windstorms, brought with them heavy rain, lightening, and hail that caused flash flooding, extensive power outages, and destruction to families, homes, and property.
CRWRC seeks funding to respond to these and other storms in the coming months. Help disaster survivors recover from Spring tornadoes and storms through CRWRC.
CRWRC's Disaster Response Services (DRS) volunteers give of their time and talents to help clear debris, assess needs, and rebuild homes after disasters strike. These volunteers are affectionately known as "The Green Shirts" throughout many disaster-affected communities and are well-respected for the quality services they provide.
CRWRC Disaster Response Services has a variety of volunteer opportunities for individuals and couples. Join us on-site to help with construction, painting, needs assessment, cooking, and more. To get started, fill out a volunteer application form (Note: This application is for individuals or couples only. If you are interested in a group assignment, please see the section below. mission: The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) is the relief and development arm of the Christian Reformed Church. CRWRC reaches out in God's name to people, both in North America and around the world, who are struggling with poverty, hunger, disaster, and injustice to help them find lasting ways to improve their lives.
One aspect of this ministry is community development. In this ministry CRWRC's staff members engage in community transformation in 30 countries around the world. They partner with more than 130 churches and community organizations to train local people to be leaders in their own communities. Together, CRWRC and these partners help people work together to overcome illiteracy, hunger, malnutrition, unemployment, HIV/AIDS, child mortality, injustice, and other issues affecting them.
Another aspect of CRWRC's ministry is disaster response and relief. When disasters strike, CRWRC responds to the urgent needs that arise. In North America, this often includes clearing debris, assessing needs, training local leaders, and repairing and rebuilding damaged homes. Internationally, it includes providing and distributing emergency food, water, shelter, and other supplies. It also often involves reconstruction of homes and livelihoods.
The third aspect of CRWRC's ministry involves working with people in North America and around the world to connect them to ministry, deepen their understanding of global issues, and encourage them to act and advocate on behalf of those in need.
CRWRC does not receive ministry shares and depends on the regular financial support of God’s people.
Mission Statement
CRWRC's mission is to engage God's people in redeeming resources and developing gifts in collaborative acts of love, mercy, justice, and compassion. -> The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) is the relief and development arm of the Christian Reformed Church.
