About BCO:
In 1965, the current Bristol Community Organization opened under the name "Economic Opportunities Commission" with a mission. The purpose was to provide programs and procedures to develop, to the fullest potential, the skills and talents of residents of Bristol. The agency hoped, in effect, to eliminate the cause and conditions of poverty.

Today, the Bristol Community Organization, Inc., BCO, is a private non-profit community action agency serving the young, the elderly, the handicapped and economically disadvantaged individuals and families in the Greater Bristol area! Towns serviced include: Bristol, Burlington, Farmington, Plainville, and Plymouth.

DEPARTMENTS -

Energy Department -
Through state, federal and private funds, the energy department is able to provide eligible households with assistance in meeting their home heating and energy costs. Referral and counseling services are also available to provide information regarding energy conservation and consumption, help with termination of utility services. Weatherization of homes and apartments, and furnace repair and replacement are available to those meeting eligibility requirements.

Headstart - (2 locations)
The Head Start Program is a federal and state funded preschool program for children from low-income families. Children are provided with a learning environment and the varied experiences that will help them develop socially, intellectually, physically, and emotionally in a manner appropriate to their age and stage of development. The program goal is to allow the child and the parents to participate in a variety of educational activities, which help them to succeed.

HOMEMAKING/COMPANIONSHIP/RESPITE -
Basic homemaking services such as light housekeeping, laundry, shopping assistance, and cooking are provided to economically disadvantaged elderly, and/or disabled residents. Respite care is also available for caregivers. Cases are accepted under a variety of funding sources including the North Central area Agency on Aging (NCAAA) - Title III of the Older Americans Act, the CT Department of Social Services and CT Community Care, Inc. Services can also be provided on a private pay basis.

RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) -
RSVP is a service program which is federally funded by the Corporation for the National and Community Service. The Greater Bristol RSVP is a member agency of the United Way of West Central Connecticut. It is dedicated to matching the talents of citizens 55 years of age and older with the community service needs of local nonprofit organization and agencies.

Social Services -
A variety of programs are administered by the Social Service Staff. This department serves economically disadvantaged families and individuals of all ages. Services include counseling, advocacy and support services. Information and referral services cover a variety of needs, including childcare resources, health, food, furniture, clothing, employment assistance, shelter assistance, money management, and State DSS services.

Transportation -
Elderly, handicapped, and economically disadvantaged Bristol residents who have no access to private transportation are offered Dial-A-Ride services within the Bristol city limits between 9:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. To reserve a ride, please call at least 24 hours in advance. Funding is provided by the City of Bristol and the North Central Area Agency on Aging (NCAAA) – Title III of the Older Americans Act.

Weatherization -
Weatherization of homes and apartments, and furnace repair and replacement are available to those meeting eligibility requirements. Weatherization applications are available at BCO for all eligible energy assistance clients.
