About the Oil Spill

BP has hired Tri State Bird Rescue to wash and rehab oiled birds. If you are interested in learning how to wash oiled birds, you must contact them - they have already established a unit in Pensecola. To report oiled shoreline or to request volunteer information, call 866-448-5816. To report oiled or injured wildlife, call 866-557-1401. To discuss spill-related damage, call 800-440-0858.

FWMA has asked to be considered as a volunteer in this event but has no confirmation that we will be allowed to participate. FWMA has served our coastal community for the past 15 years, we are federal and state permitted, and can't imagine that when the oil arrives that we will not be asked to participate in some way. Unfortunately, the time to prepare is not once the oil has arrived and sea and shore birds start arriving in need of care. The time to prepare is NOW. Please join us in getting ready to help in any way we can.

Extreme habitat makeover - second workday planned!

Saturday, June 26 from 8 a.m to 2 p.m., there will be another volunteer event to renovate current seabird enclosures and build new ones to prepare for potentially receiving oil spill victims. We'll be completing jobs from the June 12 workday and doing other cleanup and renovation tasks as supplies and volunteers permit. We still need supplies and donations to complete the jobs. There's a huge need for lumber for this project. Paypal doantions and Lowes gift cards will be extremely helpful. See the list below for specific lumber needs, and scroll down further to make a Paypal donation.

To sign up to volunteer, please join the new email group set up for these events and post an email that you'd like to volunteer. The email group is being used to coordinate tasks, volunteers, supplies and donations

If you can't volunteer but still want to help, donations of supplies and money are extremely helpful - they allow us to give the volunteers all they need to complete the tasks.

Here's a list of what we need:

•Tin Roofing
•Shade Cloth
•Hardware Cloth 1/2 Inch
•Marine Plywood
•3/4 Plywood

We can always use financial assistance as we rely solely on grants and donations to do the very good work that we do for our local wildlife.

You can send a tax-deductible donation to Florida Wild Mammal Association, 198 Edgar Poole Road, Crawfordville, Florida 32327, or use the Paypal button below to make an instant donation.

Baby Season Brings Urgent Need for Donations

From Chris: Babies are arriving and we need your help. They need special formulas, food, medical care, and caring hands to nurture them. FWMA is in desperate need of donors to help cover the expenses that so many babies generate. We have received over 40 orphaned wildlife babies in the past 2 weeks. They need your support and we do too!

When if FWMA open?

Unfortunately, FWMA is not open to the public due to permit restrictions but volunteer hours are Monday through Saturday 8am to 12 noon. If you find sick, injured or orphaned wildlife, please contact FWMA to arrange for the animal to be brought to the facility as quickly as possible; (remember….animals such as baby birds need to eat every 20 minutes – the first hour is critical to survival). Please do not feed or provide water for any animal that you have found – the wrong treatment, however will intended, can be fatal. You may call 24 hours a day for animal emergencies or between 9am and 4pm for general inquiries

Projects -
How can I help FWMA?

•Donations: Monetary donations enable us to provide our services to this region. In-kind donations such as lumber, caging, feed and cleaning supplies (see our wish list on our website allow us to use the monetary donations for vet care, expansion of the facility and projects that benefit our wildlife patients in the care they receive.

•Become a Volunteer: There are many volunteer opportunities at FWMA. For example; cleaning cages, taking care of the animals at the facility, chopping fruit, folding newspapers, picking up supplies, taking animals to vet offices, building bird houses, building habitats, never ending paperwork, fundraising and many, many, many more activities – if you have an interest or talent, we can put it to use!!!! Group workdays and projects are also appreciated.

•Organize a Fundraiser:Get a group together to organize a fundraising event dedicating the proceeds to FWMA.

•Sponsor a Building Project: There are five projects planned in 2005. You can sponsor a building project (or a portion of the project cost). A list of basic estimated costs per project is available upon request. To honor sponsorship donations of $1,000 or more, a plaque will be put up in your name at the facility on or near your project.

•Sponsor a Cage: We have five cages that house some of FWMA’s permanent residents. You can sponsor a cage by covering the costs of feed for the animal(s), care of the animal(s) and the upkeep of the cage. A detailed list of sponsorship options is available upon request. To honor sponsorship donations of $1,000 or more, a plaque will be put up in your name at the facility on or near you cage/animal(s).
