Notes:

Jean and Naomie Alexandre are the founder's of Bless A Child Foundation. We both were born in Haiti, and grew up in a religious environment. My wife Naomie was brought up in a Christian household; Her Father a Pastor, and Mother greatly involved in church. I was brought up Catholic and later on converted to Christianity.

We both moved to America in our early 20's. Like most parents, our parents sought a better life for their children. They wanted a way out from all the suffering and instability, we endured back home. When I settled in America I was over whelmed by the great opportunity. I began to get accustomed to life style. Years went by and I never gave it any thought to visit my country, Although I always sang and prayed that God would deliver my country from misery, I didn't want to go back.

My wife went once in a while, and always offered me to go with her, but for some reason I didn't want to face my fears. Memories flooded my mind of: poverty, crime, and agony. I wanted to wait until things got better. Not knowing God was going to use me as part of the solution to the crisis.

Unexpectedly after 25 years, God changed my heart, I decided it was time for me to visit back home. In 1999 I made my first visit. When I arrived I was nervous and anxious at the same time. Although my country was in worst shape then I remember leaving it, I felt like I had been missing out on something. Every corner I turned children were begging for food, offering to wash cars just enough to get a meal.

I would often come across children living under trucks for shelter. Women walking in the streets approaching me for money to feed their starving kids. I thought to myself this is not the way God intended for us to live. I could not ignore God's people. I remembered what God said in Proverbs 21:13 "If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered."

See God's people live in such dire situations. I tried my best to support them with whatever I had. I would visit an Orphanage and buy shoes, clothes, food for the kids. I didn't think of it as me doing them a favor; I saw it as my responsibility. The place I once feared became the place I knew as home again.
