UPDATES March 12, 2010
12 March 2010 - COOP - International co-operation in Haiti along with RAPID LA, the consortium of Latin American NGOs RAPID UK specializing in first aid.
In recent weeks the work in Haiti was conducted in two IDP camps arose spontaneously
A) Field Caradeux (cloak area of Port-au-Prince): estimated population of 1,500 families for a total of 7000 people.
B) Field CRESOF (Delma 33, area of Port-au-Prince): estimated population of 136 households for a total of 600 people.
Interventions will focus on three priority issues common to most areas of Port-au-Prince:
1 - Shelter or temporary shelters; various international institutions have been distributing tarpaulins without adequate technical assistance to build an adequate shelter and resistant to heavy seasonal rains now imminent - due from the month of April.
Given this situation, the team COOP - THE RAPID defined a shelter form the basis of 2.6 x 3.6 meters and can be mounted in a few hours using local materials readily available and at a minimum unit cost. The structure also allows a proper ventilation - a key factor in hot, humid climates like those of Port-au-Prince. The dimensions are reduced below the standard, the need to accommodate a large number of homeless children in camps and overcrowded, however, ensuring minimum health and sanitary conditions. It has also provided training to 30 people in the camps CRESOF and Caradeux for the preparation of the shelters. In the latter, by means of the self-management, have identified the most vulnerable families to which they will provide assistance as a priority. In the coming days we will implement another 55 modules for many families with children, elderly and / or sick people.
2 - Water: This week will be completed the installation of 6 water tanks (capacity 2000 liters) in Caradeux, where they are encamped over 1500 families. These tanks will be filled with water daily by COOP - RAPID LA and will be managed by self-management committee of the camp. While not guaranteeing the minimum standard of 15 liters / day per person, will significantly improve the hygiene conditions and access to water.
3 - Latrines: right now the field has not Caradeux latrines of any kind. To cope with this problem which will worsen the arrival of rain, we made a trench latrines 6 modules, each with 4 individual latrines, which account for a pilot to teach the refugees how to clean and take care of latrines. An estimated requirement of 75 latrines at an early stage, equivalent to a latrine for every 100 people.
The goal is to get a group of people trained in every field that can continue with the manufacture and maintenance of latrines independently, to ensure continuous use of them. COOP - THE RAPID will provide material and technical supervision necessary. We believe this strategy is appropriate considering the high number of work camps and homeless people exist in Port-au-Prince, believing that in this case, the number of beneficiaries can be increased significantly once the initial phase of training.
